Root Canals for toddlers
My sister brought my 3 1/2 year old nephew to the dentist today and was told he has a cavity in his front tooth. At first they said he would need a filling but after looking at the x-rays he said it was close to the nerve and would need a root canal. I feel so bad...for him and her. She was so upset saying she felt like a bad mom for this happening I have never hear of a root canal in someone so young...has anyones child had to have this? I googled it and it seems to be a common thing but I would love to get some advice/suggestions from you guys before she brings him.

My daughter had one at 5. Its called a pulpotomy (sp). Hers was in the back, and was causing her discomfort. Initially, I thought about pulling the tooth, but because it will be there until she is 12 or 13, I decided to do the pulpotomy. With a front tooth, I would ask about pulling (with a child its no big deal, ten seconds and its out). Then they usually put in a space saver.
Although we have a great ped dentist and my daughter did fine, I have two friend's kids, who within a few months of having the pulpotomy, lost the tooth anyway (tooth fell out on its own).
Good luck whatever she decides.

I had this done to my teeth when I was around 3 or 4. My two front teeth had horrible cavaties because my mother always gave me apple juice. I still remember going to the dentist that day and being strapped down. That's the only thing I remember and it couldn't have been that bad because for years and years of my childhood, I wanted to be a dentist.

DS needed 5 pulpotomies when he was 4. It was very stressful but he handled it like a champ.

As a dental professional I would do everything in my power to not have my child put out. Novacaine &/or sweet air can be used to make the child comfortable. Make sure the dentist that performs the pulpotomy is a specialist with children and will work with the child to make it a decent experience. Unfortunately we see cases like these all too often. It's not only from juice but from milk and formula too. The anterior teeth are constantly getting bathed in sugar when the child drinks. Brushing thoroughly is so important.  to your nephew.
