"cultural" birth story...what's your opinion?

LIF'ers come from all over the world, so it will be interesting to hear/read your take on this.

over the weekend, my mother called to tell me that a cousin had a baby girl in the dominican republic. of course, a happy, happy call. mom and baby are doing well.

my mother goes on to tell me that it was a c-section. ok, so far, nothing "out of the norm".

then... the plot thickens. it seems that the cousin requested the c-section... not because of a medical reason, not even because she was afraid of the pain of child-birth, BUT... (DRUM ROLL)...

BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WANT CHILD-BIRTH TO MESS WITH HER VAGINA!!!!!
Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

it seems that in the dominican republic, this is all the rage with new/young mothers/mothers-to-be.

they would rather have a surgical procedure and all the complications that come with that than to have a vaginal birth!!

opinions/thoughts?

Re: "cultural" birth story...what's your opinion?

Believe it or not, DH and I have friends (both born here, very wealthy), and she and her DH opted to do the same because her DH (more than her) didn't want it to mess with her hoohaah.

So I'm not sure whether it's a cultural thing or not. Neither of my friends are Spanish. They were both born here.

I totally agree.

I don't think it's a "cultural" thing at all. Happens here all the time.

Also, alot of celebs (and non-celebs I'm sure) have EARLY c-sections to avoid late term stretch marks.

Some people have C-Sections so they can retain the vaginal tone of a teenager.

Insane, I know!!

I wouldn't necessarly go THAT far.

Plenty of movie stars (Britney Spears, etc) do it. But I have yet to come across a doctor who would perform major abdominal surgery with NO medical reason whatsoever.

It has been discussed ad liem on that parenting board about the frequency of c-sections nowadays, but there has to be some sort of medical reason (even if it is just that the baby is too large).

It takes next to nothing to get a "medical reason" for a c-section.

Every other pg I hear about today it's "oh, I might need a c/s because the baby is too big" and it's an 8 pounder.

Sometimes all it takes is a due date around a holiday and the Dr is more than happy to do a scheduled C/S. Sad but true.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I am PETRIFIED of what child birth would do to my vagina.

I would 100% have a c-section if given the choice to do whatever I wanted to.

I am with you- my DH was 9lbs and a month early- he almost killed his mother- and left her unable to have childern

so based on this story- I have always wanted a C section

I wanted a c-section, my SIL wanted a c-section. Neither one of our doctors would even discuss it with us unless there was a medical reason.

I even had preeclampsia and was induced and I still had a v birth.

I worked in med mal law for 3 years, it isn't as common as you'd think for a doctor to just do one. The risks are way greater.

don't get me wrong. i understand the fear. i felt it too.

but i've experience that the body knows what to do. if it didn't "work" after the first baby, i know that there would be a lot less second babies in the world.

i just had never heard of it.

OMG when you have a C-section, not only are you having major abdominal surgery but you are also recovering with a brand new baby to take care of. So it must just be awful! Not to mention all the hospital bugs that are out there these days. So I just wonder if that is a fair trade-off for a flappy fanny???

Not to me it aint!

quirky side note.

i once dated a boy who said that women who already had kids had tighter hoohaahs than those who didn't.

his opinion was:
women who have kids want to make sure things still work, so they do keegles (sp?)

I'm glad to hear that there are still Drs out there that are not so quick to offer up unnecessary c-sections. The risks are definitley greater.

But it's been my experience, and with MANY that I know to have basically elective c-sections rather easily over the last 2 years.

I initially wanted a scheduled c-section and my Dr said no. After I passed my due date and I was headed for a 4th of July weekend delivery, he tried to push me into a scheduled C/S.

YIKES!

I was tiny, 5 lbs 11 oz and I was late... DH was like 7 lbs and apparently flew out of his mother... FIL missed it cause he was parking the car!!

Even with that, I am still very afraid. My hips are also uneven-- by a little less than 2 inches, and I wonder if this would have an impact on vaginal birth.

Don't forget, thousands of women all over the world give birth vaginally to big babies every single day. Most women are able to give birth to a large sized baby!

I read a story a while back about celebs opting for C-sections 2 or 3 weeks before their due dates, because they thought that the majority of stretch marks happened at the very end. I don't know if it's true, but it seems that every time I read in People magazine that another celeb had a baby, it's always by C-Section.

As an aside, my mother is fighting cancer and has had two abdominal surgeries in the past two years and I've seen what she's gone through. Granted, she's in her 50's, but it took her four weeks or more to recover enough to walk around with ease, lift her arms over her head, or laugh without pain. I can't imagine choosing to go through that while I had a newborn!

Re: "cultural" birth story...what's your opinion?

maybe its an age thing? cuz i would prefer a C-section too i think.

i am petrified of tearing and stitches down there.

the only reason why i wouldnt prefer a c-section is if they had to cut through my tattoo.

eta: as long as the baby is out and both mommy and baby are healthy, who cares where it came from?

Re: "cultural" birth story...what's your opinion?

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I think an INFORMED woman has the right to decide how she wants to give birth for herself.

I'm not saying doctors have to go along with it, but I wouldn't bash a woman for making her own choice here.

Funny...though he was sorta right. I've read (& have been told by btdt's) that women who deliver vaginally and tear/get an episiotomy, often wind up with a "younger" (tighter) vajayjay b/c of the way they're stitched up.

Re: "cultural" birth story...what's your opinion?

Well here is the perspective of someone who had to have a scheduled c-section. My daughter was breach and my doctor wouldn't deliver her vaginally. When he told me this I cried, and cried. I was so upset. I tried all these midwives tools to try to get her to turn, I even permanently scarred my stomach from one of the methods. She didn't, and I needed a c-section.

I had a very easy recovery and felt better than my roomate who had a vaginal birth. I also stayed in the hospital for 5 days and had round the clock care and got a lot of help breastfeeding.

Now for the next one, I will definitely try for a vaginal birth, but if I can't- I don't think I will cry too much.

The biggest thing for me, is missing out on the experience. Today my sister gave birth to her second baby (not by c-section). We were all together last night and we thought she went into labor. I was listening to her story and I did wish that someday I would get to experience labor and delivery that way too.

But if I can't, I'll be OK Chat Icon
