WARNING: TMI

i am the mother of one.

i had him au natural... no drugs, in a birthing center.

i can not speak for anyone else because we all have different thresholds for pain.

this is what i felt.

contractions = very strong mentrual cramps

child-birth = very strong stomach ache when you have to poop and you can't hold it in. sorry for the TMI.

it only really hurt for a moment until the head is out. the rest slides out.

i have felt worse pain.
i had my gall bladder removed and an ovarian cyst. they hurt worse.

wow! thank u for that ....dont worry about the TMI i wanted brutal honesty....THANKSChat Icon

I agree bad gall stones hurt worse.

Don't listen to this one...she is a rare oddity when it comes to childbirth.

It hurts...trust me. And I have a very high threshold for pain.

me too, I have walked around with nerves exposed in my mouth for days and the dentist asks "how have you functioned?", I think everyone is different, depending on the size of the baby, how your internal organs have redistributed, etc.

I agree, passing a gallstone was 100x worse then the pain of childbirth, unmedicated at 10 cm. Within 20 minutes of giving birth vaginally, I would have done it again.

Everyone has different pain thresholds and ways of dealing with pain. I didn't make a sound but the woman in the next room who gave birth that morning, screamed her head off.

Chat Icon Ok, tell me again why I'm TTC????????

Because it's worth it - maybe not the first 6 months. But, the day your child runs into your arms and says "I love you mommy" (or, in our case, more like, "I uv oo mommy"), you realize you would do it with 10 times more pain, just to recapture that moment Chat Icon

Ok, tear Chat Icon , thanks LOL!!! I know, believe me I wouldn't put myself through all this infertility sh@t if I didn't think it would be worth it! But hearing those blow by blow accounts...yikes!

It isn't all bad. I had a wonderful labor and yes, it hurt, but the pain pales in comparison to giving birth to your child. There is no other high that is so wonderful and awe-inspiring.

Plus, there are drugs that take the pain away.Chat Icon

Well I for one can't wait...I'll take all the pain in the world to join your club. It was like one day this switch went off in my head and I said ok, I'm ready now...unfortunately it will take us a little longer than planned but that's ok. I have endless admiration for you ladies with DCs. Hoping to join you soon!

By the way I love your characterization as a "battlescar" - and I'm with you on the bonding thing....

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

For me the contractions were the worst part.

I was screaming and moaning and crying and begging DH to do something.

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

Um...ya it hurts. Screaming hurt? Don't know for sure, I personally didn't get that far but from what I heard around me...it's more of a moaning, "please kill me now" type of pain once you get into the later stages.

I had a c-section (never got past 4cm, even after a 30+ hr induction - that was more of a "please rip my uterus out because that would feel better than this" type of pain) so I also had the pain of a c/s recovery afterward.

So, there's pain before, during, and after. Enough pain that Drs find that a good way to relieve it is to shoot a giant needle of anesthetic into your spine that numbs you from the chest down (aka epidural aka HEAVEN).

And I would happily do it all over again. Chat Icon

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

The contractions before the epidural were the worst pain I have ever felt.
I have a pretty high tolerance for pain. Screaming? Um, no...although I was begging DH to help me.
Crying...honestly I don't think I really could cry I was focusing on trying to breathe through it. Or just breathe at all.

DS was worth it and I would do it again.

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

Although I had a c-section, I was in labor for 17 hours, labor was very painful. I felt like someone was twisting my insides every minute.

But as soon as my son was born, I forgot the pain.

My kidney stones hurt more.

The epidural didn't take, so I felt the contractions, but I never felt like screaming. My DH and I made a game of it. He would watch the uterine contraction monitor and I would take guesses on where it was spiking based on my pain. Chat Icon

I ended up having an emergency c-section under general anesthesia.

Ok with the epidural I felt nothing. Honestly I have had #2's that have hurt more Chat Icon So my answer is no it didn't hurt for me at all. Plus my DD flew out in 5 pushes so I was ultimately blessed with a fantastic birth.

I had to Chat Icon at that

To answer the OP: I had an epidural, but the contractons I did have would have had me screaming. The actual birth I felt pain even WITH the epi- so much so that I cried out so I can't imagine the pain WITHOUT the epi....

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

I had a C section and never went into labor, and I am so happy about that because I feel like a C section was the easier way out FOR ME. I was so terrified of labor pains that when they told me Ava was breech, I was secretly so happy that I couldn't deliver her naturally. And although I was in pain afterwards, they kept me so drugged up in the hospital that it didn't matter, and when I got home, I just kept taking advil and I was fine. I felt achey, that was it.

Same here. I made them give me something during the contractions. (I couldn't get an epi)

I didn't have any drugs during the birth. It was a lot of pressure, but not as much pain as the contractions. I didn't scream like in the movies though. I moaned/grunted a few times during the 2 hours of pushing. Chat Icon

I've had several friends go through IF. I can tell you that while birth can be tough physically, I can't imagine it ever matches the emotional pain of IF.

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

I did not feel my contractions for days, but once they got intense...whoa baby...... I have a pretty high threshhold for pain but they knocked me on my arse.

I had a c-section, and the operation itself did not hurt but the recovery was pretty tough.

If I had it to do all over again knowing what I know now, I'd do it all over again.

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

I can honestly say that after having a baby, i still don't know if it hurts.

I got an epidural when the contractions started bothering me (felt like terrible menstrual cramps that radiated through my back).

After the epi I felt NOTHING. Not even pressure, no pain, nada! It was great. I honestly had a silent birth, lol! It was like I looked down, saw him come out, held him and still felt nothing. It was so odd, but great at the same time.

I hope I can do it like that again someday and highly recommend an epidural for anyone worried!

Re: ok BIG question for the mommies

I think it is different for each person. I was in a HUGE amount of pain with my first child. And what made it worse was that everytime I thought 'it can't get worse' - it did. It got much worse. So there was a lot of uncertainty and fear - combined with actual pain.

I had a compressed spinal cord and cervical disk herniation that hurt like a mother - it was NOTHING compared to the pain I felt during my labor. I am a little ashamed to admit that I DID scream once or twice.

My best friend - she barely whimpered. I sat in the labor room with her and her husband and she was a true champ.
