Actually Kitty Genovese is EXACTLY who I was thinking about last night as I sat on my porch.
That story has always haunted me for some reason.

I remember reading about a case - I think it was in Chicago. A woman was raped at knifepoint, on a busy subway platform - and no one did anything to help her. The rapsit told her to smile or he would kill her.
There are some very sick people out there.
My sister was a camp director and had to make some phone calls. I remember she was so frightened for the kids.

I actually know a doctor that didn't have MD plates on his car, b/c by OATH they are supposed to stop and help people in need, but he was afraid of the lawsuit liability. (even with the Good Sam laws, people still sue) I could not imagine suing someone that was trying to help me...but people do.
Sad, but true.
I learned about the Good Sam statute in my law class and again when I took CPR training last summer. I'd like to think I'd act immediately if I saw someone in distress, but I also might panic. Hopefully I never have to find out.
And I learned about Kitty Genovese in high school and again in college. In her case, all someone had to do was pick up the phone. Very sad.

Kitty Genovese was murdered near Austin Street and Lefferts Blvd. Right near the Kew Gardens LIRR train station.
