Re: Am I out of line?
Sorry for your loss.
I absolutely agree with the others....forward the email to every supervisor possible and the HR dept. He was completely out of line.
Please let us know what happens.

NO! HE was out of line. How dare he mock your situation like that.
I would write back: "Hmm, I don't know. I'll forward your e-mail to the HR Director for her opinion."
ITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel bad that you have to work with such an azzhole!

B- did he respond to you?
He responded to my email with "I'll be you didn't even ask" meaning I didn't ask HR if he could take a bereavement day for his brother-in-law's uncle's next door neighbor's cousin's step-son's college roomate.
I'm going to handle it in person the next time he's in. On Friday when I told him I needed to take Monday off for my great aunt, he was joking. I said "DON'T. I cannot joke about this. I can joke about a lot of things but this you need to let go." To get the email really pizzed me off.
Also I'm going to take everyone's advice & mention it to the HR director when she gets back from vacation.

Barb, I'm so sorry for your loss. His insensitive/inappropriate behavior should surely be reported to HR.
