Berating someone who is being honest about taking a day off for a death in the family is pretty crappy. Karma is going bite him in the arse sooner or later.

The guy sounds like a jerk. In the future, I would not tell him any more than he needs to know. 'FYI, I'll be taking a vacation day rather than a bereavement day.' and leave it at that.

I would save the E-mail and report him to HR. Who is to say that you are not close with your great aunt? My Aunt Rosie who was my grandmother's sister is going to be 90 tomorrow...and I am very close with her. I used to sleep over her house all the time when I was little. She used to spend weekends at my house all the time growing up.
You just lost a family member and this jerk makes a horrible joke that that...very insensitve and unprofessional

I responded back with "INAPPROPRIATE".
I report to him with a dotted line to the HR director. Not sure it's worth bringing up to the HR director though. While he's acting like an insensitive idiot, it's not personnel-file worthy.

ETA - seriously, I would email him back and say "while I don't believe you were intending to be hurtful with your sarcasm, please understand I had a very close relationship with my Great Aunt, and would appreciate that you respect that I am greiving for her death right now"

He's the Divisional VP - not HR. His response was "I bet you didn't even ask" (meaning I didn't ask if he could take off for the brother-in-law's uncle's next door neighbor's cousin's step-son's college roomate's funeral.)
I think I'll wait until next when he's in the office & give him the course schedule for Tact & Communication.

I think it's personnel file worthy. He needs sensitivity training in a big way.

Some bosses are real winners, don't they realize that these kind of sheannigans will cost the company money when one day someone sues the company? I mean that email is not only insensitive and mean; it is borderline harassing.

Girl, I would have shot back with something very nasty and probably regretted it. What a son of a biznitch baztard for even one second of diminishing any family loss. I admire your restraint.
My 50 year old 2nd cousin will be dying any day from cancer, and it will be a terrible day...no less terrible than if it was a sister or a grandparent....and if anyone tries to say differently, well they deserve a can of that whoop azz you should be opening on this guy.
I would calmly devise an email (perhaps copy HR on it) responding to his comment...he needs to be called out.
