When you're in another city or country

Do you wear clothing that indicates where you're from?

For example, we're leaving for a cruise in 2 weeks, and I have to buy some new t-shirts that are plain. I wear alot of Met and Jet shirts and I don't want people to know where I am from. You never know who you're dealing with.

I don't really have that problem -- none of my clothes say NY or any thing on it for that matter.

I don't really have anything that indicates I'm from NY area, but I can definately see what you are saying. On top of the general nut jobs out there, people tend to have strong feelings one way or the other about Americans and NY'ers as well.

I don't wear place-specific clothing, however, I think someone's "look" gives them away. In Europe, I can spot Americans in 1 second. It's something about what is being worn and how. It was funny, last week in Vegas, two gusy walked into where we were eating and I said to DH, "They're from England" based on their shoes. Turns out it was Ireland but I was close!Chat Icon

I don't have any clothing that gives away where I live, but if I did, i wouldn't wear it while away.

Re: When you're in another city or country

That seems to assume that no one outside the NY metro area wears Jets or Mets shirts.

I guess if that's ALL you are wearing the whole time you are there people would know you were from NY.

But one or two t-shirts I'm not sure I would assume you are from NY.

Re: When you're in another city or country

I do not wear clothing in another country that would "give me away" DH has a number of tshirts that have the american flag on it, and I always tell him to leave them home. While it's pretty obvious where we come from (there is just a look about us), there is no need to draw attention to ourselves in foregin countries in this day and age.

Re: When you're in another city or country

I agree, if you wear a Mets t-shirt, you're just inviting comments from people. That's one thing if you like that sort of thing, and it's all well and good to talk to people when you travel, but I find it's usually the people you don't want to talk to that will pick up on something like that and start a whole conversation/argument.

I've worn a hat at the beach with a yankees logo on vacation in the past (in Bermuda, Hawaii, DR) and no one has ever said anything to me.

My husband wears a whole lot of Raiders stuff, hes from NY....I never thought of it. I dont think people do either...maybe I just dont give them enough credit?

When I see someone wearing a Boston Redsox hat for example..I dont think they are from Boston...many fans out there and especially that way about NY teams too.

I wouldnt worry about this at all.

Re: When you're in another city or country

I don't honestly see how wearing a Mets or Jets jersey would indicate where you were from the point where it would make it dangerous. What exactly are you worried about? That they will know you're a tourist?

I see plenty of people (even native to those other cities or countries) wearing the same sort of stuff. I am fans of teams in other states and wear their stuff in NY - I don't see the problem there. I take enough precautions when I travel, but I don't think wearing sports shirts is that big of a deal as to cause a danger.

I just don't wear a lot of that stuff in general, though.

Re: When you're in another city or country

your tube socks and high top/and or white sneakers with khaki shorts and random tshirt will be enough to make your a tourist anywhere outside of the 48 states. Chat Icon

as far as travel in the US, I don't think you will be stoned if you wear a tshirt of your team of choice.

I don't mind if people know where I'm from but I'm also not gonna be the dorky American rocking the Boston Red Sox t-shirt, chewed-up baseball cap, and flip-flops while walking through the Vatican or the Louvre....or the guy asking for directions to "The Sixteenth Chapel"

I wear my clothes which doesn't have NY plastered on it anyway. If I wore that type of clothing regularly, I would wear it on vacation as well.

If asked, I have no problem telling people where I'm from. I don't think there is any doubt when DH opens his mouth.
