Re: ? for married persons...
We have life insurance through work but will more than likely up the ante when we have kids. We do not have an umbrella policy, though my sister thinks we should. We do not have a will yet. We do, however have burial plots through a fraternal organization that DH belongs to.

Re: ? for married persons...
I have a small life insurance policy through work, but we are actually in the process of buying larger policies for both of us. We do not have a will and will likely not have one drawn up until we have children. We also do not have an umbrella policy.

Yes, we have two, one for each other, and they are general POAs. We did this mostly because he is active duty and I am a reservist so there's always a chance one of us could be deployed. In fact I closed on our house with him underway so it was a good thing I had it done. I think they are good to have in anyone's case though; if there is an emergency and you have to act on your spouse's behalf a POA can make a big difference.

You only need life insurance if you will not be able to support yourself or pay for funeral expenses if God forbid something happens.
Not all married people need life insurance. It really depends.

If you have children, though, you will lose out on the other income (providing the deceased spouse was working), which will decrease the amount you can save for your children's education, etc. You lose long-term savings and investment opportunities, etc.
I think everyone with children should have life insurance...
We both have life insurance through work and will probably obtain an additional policy once we are married.

We both have them through work. I wanted to get additional, but as we have no plans for children and we both have 401Ks and pensions too, I was advised that it wasn't necessary.

I was JUST talking about this 5 minutes ago!
I was saying that DH and I really need to put together a will and get a life insurance policy....just enough to cover the remainder of our mortgage and possibly college tuition.

But why would you want to spend or possibly deplete your savings if a policy now is way cheaper than later in life? Housing and college tuition (if kids) are really $$$$$$.

If you have kids and other expenses that the other income was supporting or course that's the right move but just because you are married, doesn't mean you need life insurance on each other. It depends. That's all.
