Weird situation... please do not move....

I applied for a job today, and in the requirements it is a live-on-premises position. DH & I have a house, and I really would not sell it for a job. So here is my question. If I get the job, and have to move to live-on-premises, should I rent out my house? Would you?

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

I said other because I think it would all depend on many factors. How badly do I want the job? How far is the job? All those things would weigh on my decision.

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

It is in a better neighborhood than where we live now. The living space is bigger than where we live now. The job would be the first of a career I have been wanting to break into for a while. They pay and benefits are better than any job I've had, and the job is more secure.

The thing is, if I were to get the job, and then get promoted (eventually) then I would no longer be required to live there.

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

I personally wouldn't want to rent out my house and then move back into it---you never truly how they will take care of the house. My parents did this (rented for a year before they moved in while they were getting their old house ready to sell)--but they plan on redoing most of the house anyway.
Do you really love this house? I guess that would be a biggest factor for me

I would. I am actually kind of looking into renting a house, but it's so expensive Chat Icon

I don't love the house, and really we are waiting to build some equity so that we can completely gut & rebuild it.

Ok, based on what you just wrote, I'd take the job, and rent the house out. I wouldn't think it wise to sell it, and I would think that if you've been wanting to get into this career for a while, it'd be worth it. Chat Icon

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

It really depends on the job, and where you would be living. I personally would never want a job where I am on duty 24/7 like in a college dorm, which is the case with many of these live on premises jobs. I know people that love doing that, but it's a very different lifestyle being on call to take kids to the ER at 3AM, etc.

If they were offering you a free place no strings like that attached, I would probably rent out the house for a year to make sure the job is a good fit.

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

I think I remember you saying that you were upside down on the mortgage correct?

in that case- I would take the job and rent the house- it's just a house- and you can have some else pay your mortgage while your build equity and maybe the market will turn in your favor (after I buy a houseChat Icon )

your home is where your family is- a house is just bricks, wood, etc

Ohh that's a great point. That would decide for me if I couldn't bring pets.

I wouldn't take that kind of job.

my DH's cousin owns a house in Phoenix that he rents out. the last tenants kicked in several walls and trashed the place. it took him a whole week to clean and fix everything. just based on that story, I would never rent my house, ever!

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

I'd rent it out. If you were thinking of gutting it anyway, I think it would be a lower risk than if you loved the house.

I had a live in position in a college dorm for a while. It was OK at the time, but I wouldn't want to relive the experience at my age, married and with a child. FM if you want any more details Chat Icon

Re: Weird situation... please do not move....

If you can take your pets, and you want the job then I'd say go for it. I rented out my house for a while and I had both good & sloppy tenants. Good luck !
