I think the kid is on the PDD spectrum. I would suggest possibly Asperger's Syndrome. He has this niche of being able to analyze and spell words but lacks social skills. There have been kids in my school (a special ed school) who can do college level math but cannot interact with others on an age appropriate level. There have been kids on the master level of chess but demonstrate other deficiencies especially in the area of abtract thinking and creative thought. His lack of social skills may make him a target and may be the reason why he is home schooled. This is not the first time I have seen a socially awkward and home schooled child win a spelling championship.
That is just an opinion. I am not a diagnostician.

Ok...maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what's so amusing about that footage. My heart breaks for this kid knowing that people are laughing at him.

Did we watch the same footage? Oh, you must've watched it with TiVo while the rest of us watched it on regular TV. 
Actually, it's not amusing but just painful to watch. That poor newswoman was trying to be as nice and polite as possible but that kid just seemed to be living in some other world.

I totally agree with you. He does seem to be on the spectrum. Asperger's is a good guess.

I actually watched the spelling bee  and they interviewed each kid as they were eliminated and MY GOD , NONE of them had social skills. They can spell insane words, but they can't even form a decent sentence. It was unreal.

I don't find anything hilarious about this at all. My heart breaks for this child. I have a child who was in special ed and lacked social skills because of her disabilities. The other children were relentless and she went through hell because of it. I should have gone with my instincts and homeschooled her, but, I acquiesced to the wishes of the school. I will never forgive myself for this. I don't blame this mother for homeschooling her son. I agree with Goldi. I think this child has special needs. To laugh at him is cruel and childish.

When they were interviewing him for the spelling bee, he was telling a story about how he makes music with numbers. This kid is very mentally gifted and may just lack skills in other ways. While I think the interview was painful to watch and probably painful for the reporter, I don't laugh at him. Hopefully he will learn how to interact with the outside world.

Someone should have informed the reporter what kind of questions to ask and how to ask them - this poor kid doesn't even know HOW to answer some of her questions.
My niece has Asperger's - she is a ball of personality but she would have NO idea how to have a "normal" conversation with this woman - even though she is brilliant!
