Re: Product of our environment?
Lately, I've been thinking the same thing. These "rare" cancers seem to be sprouting up in droves.

I think its two things:
1. The environment and
2. The chemicals that we injest.

Re: Product of our environment?
Kelly I am sorry to hear of all of those terrible things
I have thought this for a long time...it's a combination of the area we live in combined with preservatives and chemicals in the foods we (grew up) eat (ing).

Sorry. I agree that we are doing it to ourselves with the things we eat, drink, or smoke and the way we treat the environment. and I think Long Island is especially bad with this - ex. my neighbor who washes his car and waxes it every week in the street and the runoff that goes into our drains, the fertilizers and pesticides that people put on there lawns so they can look green, the people who dont want to recycle and reuse things and throw out so much each day. I could go on and on.

Re: Product of our environment?
It's really scary. My family refuses to move to Nassau or Westchester County because of the breast cancer rates. These are not insular communities where it can be attributed to genetics. It has to be environmental, and they've never gotten to the bottom of it or fixed it.
It's really scary. Water is a particular conundrum. If tap water is unsafe, and drinking water from plastic bottles is unsafe, what are we supposed to drink?

The water on LI is perfectly safe to drink. Extensive test are run to make sure we are not drinking contaminated water. Actually, LI water is consistently one of the most cleanest and best tasting waters in the nation. The water we are drinking now is not from right below the surface, it is actually thousands of years old. HOWEVER we are contaminating the topmost aquifer with pesticides, and chemicals we throw down our drains. Although this is not of immediate concern, if we continue to do so, our children and children's children will become subject to our pollution and stupidity. But please don't think there is anything unsafe about our drinking water. In fact there are so many regulations on tap water and NOTHING on bottled water. You have no idea what you are drinking when you get that delivery of poland spring or buy a bottle of aquafina. All you are doing is contributing to the ever accumulating waste problem.
As for those of you struggling with terible diseases I am very sorry you have to go through that. Our environment is certainly lacking in purity and there very might well be a link. I also think part of it is that there are no so many tests to diagnose things early.. so in the past people were getting sick and dying without any real explanation. The fortunate thing at least is now there are tests for early detection and hopefully people can be treated and not die.

Re: Product of our environment?
I think its just life...I think disease is more prevelant these days due to our use of too many products that are dangerous and our lifestyles yes....But I could also name that many if not more people in my life/family who are sick or have died ......and going back could it as well...as Im sure many of the posters could.
I think that the one thing thats unfornatue is when it happens all at once, it makes us question Life in this way....which its good to do but when its for this reason, is just awful to hear.
