Breastfeeding/Pumping question...
Yesterday, the dr said that we should start feeding DD on demand... that we dont have to wake her up anymore to feed her, that she will let us know. Well, the problem I'm having today is that my milk keeps letting down while she's sleeping... I pumped it and we gave it to her in a bottle when she woke up... is this okay? Or should I just not pump and wait for her to wake up? I dont want my milk supply to decrease... help!

I would pump if your milk is leaking. As you said, you don't want the supply to decrease. I did the same thing in the beginning. Although it was rare that my DD wouldn't wake up every 2.5-3 hours to nurse Consider yourself lucky that DD is sleeping so long that your milk starts its own letdown. Keep up the good work!

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping question...
How long is she sleeping for? I would wake her if it's over 3 hours and feed her -- that'll keep your supply up and make sure that she is eating during the day and not making up for it at night.
Not sure what the deal is with your doctor, but, IMO, Peds often give bad breastfeeding advice.

I would definitely pump. You also don't want to be uncomfortable.

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping question...
I've always nursed on demand. Babies know what they want and when How long is she sleeping?

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping question...
My opinion is to let your baby eat when she wants to and your supply will regulate according to her needs. Trust your body... your boobs know what to do. ;)

She sleeps sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 3 hours at a time... once in a while at night she'll go 4 hours..

Did you have supply problems in the beginning? If not, I wouldn't pump and give my body a chance to regulate -- if you keep pumping you are going to keep leaking!

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping question...
What I did was wait until he was ready to eat and then I would pump every time he finished eating. That would keep me comfortable until the next time he was hungry and it also helped me build up a supply to freeze.

Re: Breastfeeding/Pumping question...
if u have the time, pump a little out of each just to make urself feel better (it is about 5 min on each)...this way, now u have pumped milk u can freeze and go enjoy yourself and go out to dinner with your hubby and have a few drinks!!! u deserve it!
ps- i needed breast pads until about 6 months, almost 7...i just had let down all the time, i had so much milk, and took my body that long to really regulate what was going on...and hmm, note to self, thats when DD started sleeping thru the nite...
