Am I wrong? Please tell me....
I am at my mom's house, and she tells me that she got a carseat for my dad's car. Great! Then she tells me, "Oh, so and so gave it to me." And I asked, "Is it used?" Yes, it's used and from 2000. I tell her that I do not want Ava using a used car seat and that I will buy my dad a carseat for his car. Well, that was when it started. Apparently I am "ridiculous" and dramatic for not wanting Ava in a used carseat that is at least 7 years old. I do not know the woman who gave it to her, and I explained the safety reasons to my mother, and now, they are all talking to me like I'm some sort of basket case. What is the problem? I offered to buy a brand new car seat for his car, it's not like I'm asking her to go out and buy one. It's not like my dad even NEEDS one. Whatever. Would you accept a 7 year old car seat from someone you have never met? I told my mom to donate it to someone who can't afford to buy one.

I agree with you! If it was like a year old or something, I would tell her fine, but 7 years? a lot can change with a carseat in that time (safty reasons) like you said.

I think you're right. Just try to laugh it off. She is probably just trying to save you money. My mom is the same way. She is saving my brothers Jets Jacket for Lance... It is 14 years old now!!! 
Just tell her that you want to keep it & put it in the pal box.

If you printed some of the internet articles about "old" car seats would be believe you more?
I think it can be a potentially dangerous situation that I would stand my ground on. Sorry that she made you feel that way - but I think you are doing the right thing!

I agree with you. For all you know that seat was involved in an accident, or recalled. You owe it to Ava and yourself to put her in the safest seat you can find, which means something new that you feel comfortable with.

You are definately right. MIL was really pizzed at DH and I for a few months when we got rid of DH's crib which she'd saved. Until we showed her the current safety standards she thought we were just being bratty. Then even she agreed that it was not worth the risk to save some money.

ITA. Print her all the warnings about older car seats and new regulations. Your daughter's safety should be the first concern.

Yikes! I think too dangerous!!!! They say that a car seat is no good after 5 years and you don't know if the person was ever in a car accident either. Car accidents can alter the safety of a car seat and nothing has to be visibly damaged to make it ineffective. I would not allow my DD in it. I hope your mom understands...if not, stand your ground!

we got one from my cousin that was about 7 years old and i contacted the manufacturer to see if it was recalled and it was they sent the piece needed. rach its up to you on a comfort level do what you think its right its your daughter.

I wouldn't use it either and I do not think you are being ridiculous.
I know my infant carrier says not to use beyond 5 years so I would imagine that a convertibal carseat my have similar guidelines. Plus just because she purchased it in 2000 doesnt mean it wasnt manufactured earlier either and you have no idea if it was in any sort of accident.

ITA. If you knew the entire history of the car seat & checked the manufacturer's website, then I would say yes, if you're comfortable with it. It's apparent that you're not, so it shouldn't even be up for discussion.

I contacted the manufacturer of a used seat that I was going to use for a spare part....they no longer made it and suggested to use one less than 5-6 AT THE MOST.

Ok, thanks girls. I just feel like, why would I risk safety for money? I'd rather spend another 100-150 bucks on a brand new Graco or Evenflo and know that it's brand new. My point with them was that if I buy a new one now, they can have it for all of their grandkids. They'll get over it. I know they were trying to save me some money, but some things aren't worth it, in my opinion.

I wouldn't use it either. Before DD was born, I was given a used carseat about 5 years old. DH thought we should use it but I went out and bought a new one and told DH he could use the old one in his car (I knew it would never happen). It's still in storage. Good for you for making sure Ava is as safe as possible.

I am very safety-conscious. I definitely would never accept a used car seat. Even a 1 year old seat from someone I knew. Even if they were never in an accident, where was the seat stored? The straps could be damaged if it was stored somewhere damp, or if a chemical spilled on it. It could have been dropped in the garage, or had something dropped on it. It's too much of a risk for $150. Use second-hand clothes and toys (as long as they are safe) to save money. Never scrimp on safety items.
