I've got a Wednesday Night Debatable Topic for You!!

Heard this on the radio today (you know who, LeslieChat Icon

Anyhow - they were talking about a 3rd year law student at Brooklyn Law - it was just discovered that very recently, she posed totally nude for a Playboy online website - it has little clips of her - she is totally naked, laughing about wanting to do something crazy before she becomes a lawyer, umm - holding up gavels to her naked breasts...

So, shocker, someone finds out and it gets passed around all of Brooklyn Law - professors, students, etc.

So, now there is talk about that she may not be able to join the Bar...that although she did not do something illegal, she did something unethical, something that does not go along with the ethics that lawyers are supposed to uphold.

Now, we probably all laugh and say that of course there are shady lawyers out there, but the debate on the radio was also saying that you should at least be making an effort of trying to uphold this ethical standard when first being admitted to the Bar...they were also questioning her decision making abilities, etc.

What are your thoughts?

I'm not sure - on one hand - I agree that she should not be admitted - she has done something completely unethical and I truly do question her thought process and decision making - I sure as hell would not want her to be my lawyer.
On the other hand, I say, let her become a lawyer, but then she will more than likely have difficulty getting a job and/or clients.
She had worked at one point at the Brooklyn DA's office - if she is admitted, she can sure as hell kiss any type of public job goodbye!

I totally agree with this statement that her actions "does not go along with the ethics that lawyers are supposed to uphold" and she should not be admitted to the bar.

Does this act say that she would have been a bad lawyer...of course not...she could be the BEST lawyer on earth...but, I truly believe that if there are ethics and standards to follow...you MUST follow them...and not act like a porn star...that's just not ethical IMO.

if she is third year, she is not a member of the bar and therefor should not be held to their ethics.

That's crap! Chat Icon What she has done prior should have nothing to do with her career as a lawyer and should not prevent her from being a lawyer.

But if she aspires to it then she should be behaving as such.

Would it change anyones minds if it was your childs Kindergarten teacher and she talked about sexual things she wanted to do?

current teacher doing this would bother me...if I found out she did it while still in school...I would chalk it up to that. I went to school with a ton of teachers to be, and have loads of pictures from bars and parties (some from grad) whats the difference?

It's not like she did this 10 years ago and it is now coming out - she did this very recently - as she is getting close to finishing law school, and getting ready to take her Bar exam and be admitted to the Bar. I think she completely screwed it!

Re: I've got a Wednesday Night Debatable Topic for You!!

I saw this on the front page of the Daily News yesterday. I am an attorney and can honestly say that many lawyers have done MUCH worse unethical things than pose naked. The "high standards" of the bar have, unfortunately, been diluted over time (IMO). She should still be admitted, gimme a break, she didn't harm anyone else.

Chat Icon i don't understand where the sexual things being said comes into play here.

To answer your question though, if my childs kindergarten teacher posed nude for playboy prior or years ago... than i wouldn't care. Unless she is stripping for the class... why should that make a difference in her teaching skills?

Yeah - but cheating (typically) isn't also a public thing put out there on a website.

Re: I've got a Wednesday Night Debatable Topic for You!!

I think it's hard because, where do you draw the line? If someone smokes pot, should they be denied admission? What if they once got pulled over for DWI? It's a slippery slope.

Sure, maybe I wouldn't want her as my lawyer because she has bad judgment, but that's just me. She may still be a darn good attorney that others would hire.

ummm...she could have done any number of "crazy" things before becoming an atty!

she could have:

- gone skydiving
- gotten a tattoo
- went bungee jumping

ANYTHING - other than doing what she did. Chat Icon

what the heck goes through some of these people's minds??? Chat Icon

eta: NOT saying she should'nt be allowed into the bar (that's for them to decide) - but at some point, you have to think AHEAD - and how your actions/decisions that you make NOW, may very well come back to bite you in the azz later on!

Yes i agree. Take a look at cops for instance. They have the same ethical responsibilities and you really think that they were all saints before becoming cops??

Definitely not...

i agree. i think many people these days are too conservative (no offense). I don't see how posing for playboy makes her a bad lawyer or how it affects it in any way. Everyone does things in their lives that they're not proud of or may regret... if we start holding everyone for what they've done in the past...

well where would we all be?

In order to be admitted to the bar, in addition to passing the exam, a person must meet the character and fitness requirements. Being convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, failure to pay child support, mental health issues in the past, etc. have been reasons why people have not been admitted to the bar or why their admission has been delayed.

As a third year law student, this person was (or should have been) well aware of the character requirements. I think she should be held accountable for her poor decision making, especially since this occurred during her last year of law school. If she passes the bar, I think her application for admission should at least be delayed.

Re: I've got a Wednesday Night Debatable Topic for You!!

Am I the only one who doesn't give a crap who poses nude? Who cares? Maybe the gavel up to her tatas was a bit much, but why does anyone care that she posed nude? And what does that have to with being a lawyer? Maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't care if my lawyer posed nude. Hell, I wish I had a good enough body to pose nude!

Re: I've got a Wednesday Night Debatable Topic for You!!

Ok so Ive got another situation along the same lines for ya:

What about our very own President who took cocaine before he was appointed?

Should that be considered any differently than posing nude????
