Re: Sorta Spinoff: Should felons be allowed to vote?

Nope.

They gave up their rights as a citizen when they committed a felony.

I totally agree with that law.

No. It's one of those rights you give up when you commit a crime.

Re: Sorta Spinoff: Should felons be allowed to vote?

BUt they've paid their debt to society? Isn't that enough? What if they've reformed?

Is it far that felons can be asked to die in abttle when they can't vote?

Re: Sorta Spinoff: Should felons be allowed to vote?

Depends on the type of felony they committed. Everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance. Should murders and kidnappers be able to vote? NO! Should young adults who made a stupid mistake like stealing something be able to vote? YES!

I think I agree with this...I don't believe they should be allowed to vote while in prison but if they have done their sentence and are released I think that they should gain that right. If they are reformed enough to live among us I believe they should be reformed enough to vote

Absolutely, once they've paid their debt to society they should be allowed equal representation and voting rights.

I guess if they can run for office, they may as well be allowed to vote. Chat Icon

Re: Sorta Spinoff: Should felons be allowed to vote?

Yes. If the penal system feels they are reformed enough to live in society, then they should also be reformed enough to vote. They have paid their dues, they deserve to have those rights (they still have to pay taxes, so they should get a say)

I'm going to modify my answer a bit.

I think convicted felon is too broad of a term. If they were to limit it to say, felons convicted of Class A Felonies (murder, child molestation, arson, kidnapping, etc).

Because you can be convicted of criminal possession of Marijuana (a Class C Felony) and you are technically a convicted felon... but maybe that shouldn't prevent you from voting after you've repaid your debt to society (a maximum sentence of 5 years).

I agree with this.

Someone who chooses to molest a child- not exactly the person that i want playing a part in the decision of the direction of this country. Chat Icon

Nope.

They gave up their rights as a citizen when they committed a felony.

I totally agree with that law.

I agree. I also don't think you should be able to vote while inprison, but once you are out- and it isn't a class A felony- I think they should be able to vote.

No, convicted felons should not be allowed to vote...they give up that right by committing a felony. And what criteria could be used to determine who is reformed?? Objective criteria? Subjective criteria?? Too unworkable of a standard.

And who is asking felons to die in battle??? There is no draft and with the exception of Charlie Rangel, nobody is seroiusly considering such a measure. I don't even think convicted felons are allowed to enlist so this argument makes zero sense to me....

Re: Sorta Spinoff: Should felons be allowed to vote?

According to Military G I Site

Can I Join the Army with a Felony?

One of the most common questions we get is "Can I Join the Army if I have a Felony". This F.A.Q. Answers that questions and outlines what other offenses that may keep from joining the U.S. Army.

All branches of the military are different when it comes to recruiting standards, but they all have regulations regarding felonies. The military maintains a high "moral" standard for recruits and is the basis for not allowing most felonies. If the felony occurred when you were a juvenile you have a better chance of getting in the military but if the felony occurred as an adult you may have a hard time getting in, if at all. In either case it all comes down to the type of offense and how long ago it was.
