Re: Anyone moving out of state?

DH and I want to move to FL eventually....I have family in Ft. Lauderdale area and his parents are in the Tampa area.

But how can I leave my friends, my parents, my sister, my brother? I dont know....its too hard for me to even contemplate. My little sister is my best friend and my brother is only 10 years old.

So we shall stay in NY, rent, and be miserable for now.

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

All of you bring up some wonderful points about staying here AND for moving...it's hard to know which is the right thing to do.

All I know is this: I'm a teacher with two years experience and a Masters Degree from Columbia. I CAN'T FIND A JOB. I can walk away from all of this right now, and have a beautiful home AND a teaching position in any grade I want down there. It's almost too much NOT to go.

So, we will be going to Charlotte during the 1st week of April, with our down payment good and ready, and I have a feeling we'll be making an offer...

I'm so excited. NY will *always* be my home...but honestly, I can't fathom staying the way things are now. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

FYI - there is a controversial bill that's been proposed in FL regarding the property tax problem. Govenor Crist and the Republican party down there realize the property tax issue.

It is going to go to a special election (don't know when) - but what will be voted on is whether people would rather lose property tax in exchange for a hefty rise in the sales tax - Palm Beach Cty's sales tax is currently 6.5% - the proposal is to raise it to 9% in exchange for doing away with property tax. Sounds good to me - lol - but doesn't benefit everyone - doesn't benefit renters (but they'll still have to pay increased prop tax), doesn't benefit snowbirds - the house must be your homesteaded property (your primary residence) - so - there's pros and cons depending on your situation but just wanted to throw this out there.

My brother was saying something about that- but of course he didn't know all the details- they need to do something down there

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

We are also considering moving OOS - not down South but to the Denver area. We own a house in Garden City and both work "high-power" aka high-stress jobs in NYC. With two kids we are looking for quality of life and for me to be able to stay at home. I think one thing no one has considered in this post is the situation you'd be in if you already own a house in LI and can sell. For us, we can take the money we already have in this house and get a HUGE place in Denver for almost all cash. My DH and I both make relaitively large paychecks but we keep asking ourselves, for what?? We are burnt out on the rat race!

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

DH and I moved to Chesapeake VA about 6 months ago. We are about 45 mins from Williamsburg. We like it here, DH loves it but I am having a hard time settling down here. I miss my friends and family a lot I am hoping that it will get better in time. I really need to make some friends which I am finding as you get older is not so easy.

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

I don't think we will ever move out of state, but we have talked about moving back upstate when we start having kids. DH is from Rochester and we both went to school in Buffalo, so we have family and friends there. The only things is that neither of us can find jobs we like Chat Icon DH is an sustainable architect and I work in specialized financial products, neither of which has a market upstate. Who knows though... maybe in ten years we won't care Chat Icon

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

My husband and I had a house built in Hilton Head Island SC we did it right after we got married. My in-laws live down there and we figured our wedding money would go futher down there then here so we did it for investment only. But my family is still here so that is why I haven't made the move yet. We will see in a year or two!!

Denise

Plus like everyone else is saying were on the island are you getting a brand new house 3 bedroom 2 and half bath marble fireplace in masterbedroom and living room. many other upgrades for under 250,000 pre construction.

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

We moved to Georgia 3 months ago and it was the best decision we ever made. I am a stay at home mom now but could have easily made the same money down here and although my husband did transfer from NY, his company would never give him a NYC salary down here if they felt that it was that out of line. I think that it depends on what you do for a living and you must do your research.

Research is the key!

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

I moved down south one week ago. My DH moved about 5 months ago and we recently built a house. We are living in AL on the border of AL and FL. We have a beautiful home that we built and our mortgage payment with taxes and insurance is less then the rent for our one bedroom apartment in NY. I love LI but we could not justify the expense of living there and we did not feel that we could give our future family the same life that we had growing up because of the expense to live. DH is making more money here then he was on LI and I am making about 15% less then I was making in LI. The cost of living here is less then half of the cost of living in NY so we definitely are ahead with money. The only thing that I have found to be more expensive here is Food as there are not as many supermarkets in the area. Other then that the cost of living is much less. The decision to move was fairly easy for us because my entire family (parents, and both sisters and their families) live here.

I was the director of telecommunications for a major furniture company and my husband works for a company that creates the programs that allow networks and advertising agencies to communicate in regards to commercial time and such.

My husband asked for this transfer and his company was excited about the possibilities. Maybe you could ask your company for a transfer. Not sure if you could do your job out of your home or not but it is worth asking if you are serious about moving.

We really love Atlanta.
As a side note: my entire cul-de-sac is from NY or NJ. It is like we never left.

right now Altanta is our first choice

my DH can transfer- open a branch office- or basically do anything in his field and make the same money

I work in the home furnishing industry- so I couldn't transfer- but I am sure I can find something similar- I could be a buyer or continue in Product Development

thanks for sharing!

Yeay GA!! Chat Icon

We're going on a year here and I love it.

DH has his days...when his family visits (which is often) he's in pig heaven. But clearly, he misses them when they go back.

Whereabouts are you guys?

Chat Icon OMG, why is Chinese food so expensive?! Chat Icon

But "real food" from the supermarket, we find that much cheaper than in NY. I live at Kroger and Ingles...and love that I get .10 cents off every gallon of gas for every $100 I spend at Kroger.

$30 for 2 meals of take-out, that's another story!! Chat Icon

I LOVE the gas thing too. I get so giddy when I only pay 1.90 for gas. It is sad but it really makes my day.
I love Kroger but have not been to Ingles yet. I may have to check that out. I went to Fresh Market yesterday and although I thought it was nice it is more of a specialty store than anything else.

We used to get chinese every week in NY and pay about 14.00 dollars. Here in GA it is 30.00 and NOT GOOD! That is the only downfall so far. Takeout is expensive and bad! HA!

oh no- this could be a deal breaker for my DH- so I better not tell him

it reminds me of the end of good fellas

"I order spaghetti marinara and got egg noodles and ketup!"

they don't have diners down there either..Right?

I guess I have to learn to cook- we spend too much money on take - I never spent $14 on chinese- we spend more like $40!

We have noticed that nice restaurants here-not fancy fancy- but nice/good are less $$ though.. Pappadeux..have you been? AMAZING seafood- we can eat SO much food there...last time DH had a 2lb lobster, we had a pound of crawfish, dozen raw oysters and I had a crawfish dinner-and a dessert-for 82.00! I could'nt believe it!

Because the state is so big and everything is driving distance, there are great restaurants, but not "authentic" little places like in NY. We miss that a lot.

No diners. Unless you count Waffle House...OMG!! Chat Icon

Really? That stinks!! I find Publix to be way too expensive. But I love that they have almost all the Puerto Rican foods I need.

And yes!! We went to Bahama Breezes (have you been?) it was 10 of us, 3 course meal, tons of drinks and the check was around $320 including tip...and I had a bottle of champagne. Love that!!

This is another bad food thing. NO DINERS. Well, my husband said that he has seen some closer to the city but not where we live.

I am going home to NY in March and plan on eating out everyday. I mom is a little upset that I don't want her home cooking.
