I hope you have some space heaters. That's the only thing that got us through a few weeks ago when our oil burner broke!

Re: We have no heat & a newborn
throw a few pots of water on the stove to boil, it'll emit a lot of heat.... and I'd start calling the oil company every 1/2 hour until they get there

In college we heated up the oven and left the oven door open, though that was probably dangerous...It did heat the place up!

Re: We have no heat & a newborn
This happened to us 2 weekends ago when right after we had a snowstorm. We just moved into the house in early October and the oil inspector guy said we had 3/8 of a tank then...flash forward to late January - we have no oil and it's COLD out! Thank god we don't have a newborn yet. They came and gave us a few gallons since it was a Saturday and there was no oil deliveries that day - we had to wait it out till Monday. And we ran out of oil again on Sunday night!

Re: We have no heat & a newborn
I would definitely complain via letter. At this point you paid hundreds of dollars for something that should have been delivered BEFORE you run out of oil.
That's the whole point of automatic delivery so you don't have to call.
Glad you have heat. I hope the delivery guy saw the baby & felt horrible.

Normally, I would say yes. But with this weather I am sure the delay in responding today was beyond their control.
ETA: I don't know how auto delivery works so I don't know how the oil company schedules them.

I know the weather is a factor. It was terrible out before but I think a house with a 5 day old baby should take some priority over someone else with the same problem. Maybe Im hormonal

Re: We have no heat & a newborn
Insist on speaking to a supervisor and find out why they did not efficiently forecast when you would run out of oil. That's exactly what it's called too - a runout. All good oil companies should be striving to have ZERO runouts.
On automatic deliveries, it is up to them to figure out when you are going to need oil. With the lower than normal temps lately, they should have known that you were low.

Maybe there were several homes with 3 day old babies??

Re: We have no heat & a newborn
With the weather I'm sure they were overloaded. I too am low and called and since I'm at 1/4 I can go a few more days technicaly but they said that there are more urgent cases ahead of me. No biggie for me, but a 4 hr window is about right. I once had emergency service at 1am! Now that's service!
Sorry you were so cold. DH and I keep an eye on the tank around this time of year. I've been home a lot more over the past two weeks so we are using more. I'm sure you guys didn't realize you were so low.
Our automatic delivery is supposed to be in 10 days!

I actually checked it last week before I went to the hospital. I certainly forgot about it with the events of the past couple of days.

Of course you weren't thinking of your oil! But glad you have heat now.

Re: We have no heat & a newborn
Is your tank underground? The above ground ones have a gauge you can read. I just had a new burner and tank installed and I went form a 550 tank to a 275 tank. We got filled up about 10 minutes ago. The said we did not need it, I was like- Hello- I do not want to run out of oil.....I would call anyway even though you are filled so it does not happen again. Congratulations on the baby!
