Buying a home on LI and Global Warming...

We are currently shopping for a home, but it is so hard b/c of global warming and the prospect of LI being flooded in the next 10 or so years. Even if it is not by then, experts say that homes in some areas may be uninsurable -- many insurance companies have already stopped providing homeowners insurance on LI -- it seems every week there is an article saying that another one has dropped coverage on LI.

This leaves me to my question-- is this affecting your home purchase at all? Am I the only paranoid nut that is afraid to buy a house here? (I will have to b/c of our jobs)

I think you are the only one afraid. Chat Icon Seriously, I haven't heard of anyone that worried about it. I don't know of anyone who had a hard time finding insurance...The REA usually recommends companies that insure high-risk flood areas.

Oddly enough...yes it has. It's made us not want to move completely off LI because most of our family is here, but it has made us want to stay away from the South Shore.

I know...I'm weird.Chat Icon

I think you took that all Gore movie to heart. I mean it took millions of years for the glaciers to begin to melt. It's highly unlikely that it will happen in our lifetime or even the next 10 generations!

Where have you read this about LI? I have not heard anything about LI being under water in the next 10 years. I know it's a definite possibility, but I thought they were talking hundreds of years from now.

That seems a little extreme to me. I can see maybe not purchasing a house near the water but to move completely off of LI I wouldn't do.

Re: Buying a home on LI and Global Warming...

We are not looking on Long Island but talk of not buying due to what may happen reminds me of friends who have homes in New Orleans. The hurricane was predicted for about 40 years - seriously they learned about it in school and it was pointed out all the time that the city is a bowl surrounded by water. But that did not stop people from buying in New Orleans (to live and for investment) and it's not stopping lots of people from rebuilding and moving back to New Orleans.Chat Icon

where did your information come from???? Chat Icon

every geographic location has it's environmental challenges--- CA has mud slides and earthquakes, Hawaii is threated with a possible Tsunami, florida has hurricanes, Venice has flooding, the midwest has tornados.... But, people still live in all of these places... and those are (for the most part) based on ACTUAL things that have happened there. Like someone else said about the icebergs taking years and years to melt... i don't think LI is going to be sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic anytime soon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Not to get all political, but global warming is something we should all be conscious of. I am not saying that LI will be underwater in 10 years, but we WILL see the effects of global warming in our lifetime. There was an article today in the Times that 80% of the largest glacier in South America has been lost in the past 20 YEARS, and they expect it to be gone in the next 3!! Again, I typically stick to the topic of the forum (Home), but DH is a sustainable architect and this is something we are both very passionate about.

Right as are most. But I think the poster was more worried about whether or not she should buy a house on LI because of the prospects of it not being here in ten years. I think most posters argree that LI will be here for a long time.

Ok, global warming is bad, but I've never heard that LI will be under water in 10 years.

I'm not to concerned because disasters happen everywhere, you can't live in fear or have a fear of setting down foundation somewhere based on that stuff. Tornados, Eathquakes, Hurricanes, etc all can happen but that's no need to think like that

what an awesome job!!!! while I am a huge supporter of stopping global warning it did not effect my decision on whether to buy on LI or not. Personally I would never buy on the south shore because of the flooding risk, but thats just a personal preference and has nothing to do with global warming

I'm surprised so many have not heard of this but I guess you can thank the corporations who want to keep everything hidden or make it sound far fetched - God forbid they have to change their policies as far as their behaviors and how they affect our environment. I've heard this many times about LI and flooding due to global warming. However you wont find the info everywhere - scares the h*ll out of me but I'm here already....what can I do?

Re: Buying a home on LI and Global Warming...

although I am very aware of global warming and its detrimental effects on the environment, it would not stop me from buying a house on LI. Yes glacial melting and rise in sea level is a threat and yes it is inevitable. HOWEVER, it is not something that is going to happen all at once. It will be a gradual rise - its not like one day all will be fine and the next day LI will be under water (like in The DAy After Tomorrow). If LI goes under water, so will Manhattan, its in as much of a threat as LI as well as ALL coastal areas all over the world - including NC, SC, FL, CA, etc...

Re: Buying a home on LI and Global Warming...

I did not say that Long Island will not be here in ten years, but the water table is supposed to raise three feet in ten years, making many waterfront homes' property marshy and maybe worth a lot less. It is a fact that many insurance companies like Allstate and Travelers are refusing to insure many areas of the island because they believe that LI is due for a large hurricane or major flooding in upcoming years. I don't know if many of you live in towns that are on the South Shore, but flood insurance is rapidly increasing -- my sister pays over 2k a year for flood insurance alone! Due to this, we are not buying in the town we grew up in because we cannot afford the extra expense. To deny that global warming will not affect Long Island is strange-- just looking at the weather changes, reading the paper every day, and hearing about bizarre weather issues around the world is proof enough. It makes me wonder whether I should buy a house on LI, or at least anywhere near the shore if its value may drastically decrease as the years go by. That's all.

buy on the north shore - you'll have ocean front property - that will increase your value ;)

Re: Buying a home on LI and Global Warming...

I truely feel there is no need to worry. As for insurance coverage, that is happening everywhere more as a result of Hurricane Katrina (I know because my friends in FL are dealing with that now).

See Hurricane Katrina basically used up so many funds out of the companies pocket that many decided to limit where they were allowing new policies and increase flood areas (which south shore LI, especially south of Merrick/Montauk) was always a flood area not just recently.

In addition, like I stated previously, disasters can happen anywhere. You could live 500 miles inland a get a tornato or live in CA and get a earthquake or any where only the East Coast is due for hurricane's once in while, but to use this as a way to decide your future isn't wise.

Don't live in fear or be afraid to settledown because of it. Life's too short, just enjoy it.

And P.S. I read Newsday everyday (I know, sounds like the commerical) and yes they have discussed hurricane's and global warming, but never to the extent you are saying. I've never heard them every say "be worrysome about".

Most of the recent weather changes are due to El Nino, not global warming.

If it's hard for someone to pay higher homeowners insurance, i'm not so sure that those same people would be buying up all of the waterfront properties Chat Icon

no one's saying that LI is immune to global warming/el nino/nature's effects... just that the Sky isn't falling at the moment... or expected to within the next 10 years. but who knows.....

Re: Buying a home on LI and Global Warming...

I personally would never consider a home on a canal or bay on the south shore of LI, or even a few houses away.
There are many north shore areas with bluffs that I would consider.
I do believe that Long Island will experience a major natural disaster in within 10-15 years. There are theories that say el nino's & other damaging weather cycles are caused by global warming. I'm not afraid of living on LI in general though. Much more important to me, is assuming some responsibilty for what IS happening & trying to be more respectful of our environment. I think if all the highly educated people on long island lived more responsible lifestyles we could make a difference by showing other parts of the country/world how humans need to live in cooperation with the earth. So maybe we can slow down this terrible process we've started & future generations will have a chance at enjoying a healthy life of this planet.
While Gore's perspectives are very one sided, there are still obvious facts that we should not deny or ignore.
