Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
Yes.
I have my own policy for my car separately and Geico makes me be on DH's as well. Although, they SAY that it doesn't make a difference in price, but I don't know if that is true.

Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
A friend of mine works at Geico, and from the stories he tells me I *think* this is one of their policies.
Reason being they have no way of knowing if he is going to drive your car, so even if he has his own insurance on his own car he wont be insured if he drives your car (I think?)

Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
This has been insurance company policy for a long time, at least since I worked at a broker back in 1990.
Anyone who lives at your address with a license can be put on your policy unless they prove that they have their own insurance and their own vehicle.
Even then, I think they can still be put on as an occasional operator - this part I'm not sure about.
But if a married couple has one car, they are going to put both of you on the policy if they find out. And they could even make the person with the worst driving record the primary operator which is more $ than an occasional operator.

then he wanted on the plan, and as a couple the rate went down quite a bit.

Yes, I have geico. I had to put my dh on my insurance too. He has his own insurance with another company but his name appears on my policy.

Kath-
We have Geico and I had to add John to my policy, even though he was already a Geico customer. Doing this saved us $$$ since I had the better policy.

Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
Yes. DH had to go on my policy even though he doesn't have a car insured under Geico (my truck is). DH is covered for any car he drives through his dealership's insurance, yet the Geico rep told us that since he is a licensed driver at my household, he could technically drive my vehicle and they put him on the policy. Whatever. It was the cheapest insurance for us.

When I added DH my rate went down (not significantly, like $50)

I've heard this too. I put my husband on my policy before we were married - it just makes sense to have the multiple car discount. Plus after 8 years GEICO gave us a 30% discount for being longterm customers

Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
techincally, anybody living in a household (of age of driving) is supposed to be listed on the policy.
Policy should decrease since they think people are married, they have more of a responsiblity to getting home safe, etc...

Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
Hmmm - I have Geico but I never changed my name with them. (Still haven't changed it on my license, SS, etc -- don't know if I ever will but that is another issue).
Anyway, I don't think they know I got married... they just think I moved

He had to be added as a driver so its on record. I'm not sure it changed the price though. This was a few years ago.

Re: If you have Geico Insurance and are married
Be careful though - even if there's a discount for putting hubby on the policy, they're going to run his MVR report and possibly his credit report. If he has accidents, tickets, or bad credit, it might hurt you too.
They don't go seeking out who's at your address most of the time until something changes. Address, name, if there's a claim, etc.
