When I went to Disney five years ago, we spent about 1K per person to stay at a New Orleans type of hotel in Orlando, entrance to the parks for three days, and it was a vacation for 5 days.

I stayed in the Dominican Republic for 7 nights, all incluse w/air for $700....

Disney is SUPER expensive for NOT leaving the country.

i think it all depends on TIMING... as with any vacation.

we've spent under 2k and stayed at a moderate resort on disney property.

and we're spending just under 3k to go to the Dominican Republic next week.

it all depends on where you go, and the package choices you make. Most vacations are as expensive (or affordable) as you make them to be.

I totally agree with this as a general statement! My friends and I happened to find a deal to Hawaii when they were having a tourist slump and went for $800/each air/hotel.

Then i think about how much we paid for our HM Chat Icon

i think it is almost embarrasing how adults love disney so much. and i may get totally flamed for this, but to go there on your honeymoon?????? that is so weird to me. it is totally a childhood-only type thing to me. even my il's who have tons of money and can go anywhere in the world go to disney by themselves ALL the time. I just don't get it.

I never got the Disney obsessed either until I saw my mom - a grown woman - go crazy collecting Beanie Babies. She would explain in detail why she loved them so much. It was a part of her childhood that she missed because after the age of 10, no one bought her stuffed animals/toys (her mom died). My old friend & her husband dress in matching Disney clothes and now dress their kids in them too.

I've had a Beatle-obsessed old boyfriend, a Warner Brothers obsessed relative, a Mustang enthusiast DH. People have obsessions all of the time.
For me, whatever floats your boat. Just don't buy my kids clothes with characters on them - or if you do just don't expect them to wear them.Chat Icon

It CAN be a cheap place to go if you don't go first class.

It's drivable for people who don't like to fly.

And it's fun - what's so wrong with fun?

I mean, I like a quiet B&B as much as the next gal, but sometimes you need to scream uncontrollably on the Rock N Roll Roller Coaster and see some 3D muppets!!

Re: This is my opinion only....Disney Obsessions...

It can be really cheap!

They have $1600 for a family of 4 deals. You can't beat that!

Also, for that amount you are getting entertainment all day and all night long. Rides, shows, parades, fireworks, etc. Another vacation might cost less, but then you are paying for activities. You can't beat the amount of stuff there is to do at disney, even for the price. And if you get an annual pass, it's cheaper, and a premium annual pass makes it more like an all inclusive

if it's not the type of stuff you like to do in the first place, then of course you don;t care how cheap it is, but there's a lot

Actually, we weren't going to be able to go on a honeymoon at first. We were going to my cousin's destination wedding cruise - so we were going to forgo a honeymoon.

At our rehearsal dinner, my cousin presented us with and envelope that said:

"Kevin and Mary, you just got married. What are you going to do now?"

Open it up:

"YOU'RE GOING TO DISNEYWORLD!"

I have to tell you, we had a wonderful, wonderful time. I don't think there is anything wrong with going there on your honeymoon. It's not just for kids.

That is something I never understand. Its not just Disney though. I had a co-worker who only ever went to the Bahamas. I havean aunt & unlce who always either go to Disney ( almost 60 & no kids) or to the Lancaster, PA area.

I agre that its fine for people to have different obsessions, but I HATE when people assume that everyone share the same love.

I find that happens a lot with Disney lovers--I guess b/c it is so popular. I have no interest in Disney whatsover, and I had a friend buy me a Mickey Mouse watch! Chat Icon

There are so many things that people are obsessed with that I don't understand. I don't understand why many ladies are obsessed with designer handbags when I think most of them are ugly, but who am I to judge them for it? To each his or her own.

Personally I can not understand fanaticism of any kind.

However I would like to share my last disney experience. I dont think that many people know this but the first wekend in June is Gay/Lesbian weekend at Disney. Unbeknownst to my friends and I, we booked a weekend getaway there for that weekend.

Upon arrival, we were told the resort would be extra crowded but no one explained WHY it would be extra crowded. Then we started noticing that there seemed to be a lot of gay couples. We finally asked a waitress. Apparently about 120,000 G&L men and women go every year that same weekend. It gets crazy. We had a great time but the guys were so afraid of getting hit on the entire time. So my disney experience is probably a little different than everyone elses.

Same here-I just don't get being into something so much that it peppers your body, home and life so thoroughly.

Not just Disney, though that is a big one, but any "theme" that consumes adults (Disney, a sports team, a band, a celebrity, a color (I have a cousin who only wears purple??), whatever)).

Everyone likes diff things. I would rather go to some bed and breakfast in New England than to Disney. Too many lines, too many people. I guess that's another thing that bothers me....all the chaos there, it's just not relaxing for me.

I don't like disney characters, but I have been to disney world,

I have however an unhealthy obsession with Hello Kitty (which has waned considerably) and I have made the pilgrimage to her homeland, Sanrio Puroland....and I would go back again.
