dream feeders-come in please

i have been dream feeding hannah since she was 3 months between 10-11pm. since i had been doing that, she was sleeping thru the night. 2 weeks ago she got sick and stopped sleeping thru the night and refused her bottle at 10-11pm. last night she refused it and woke at 330amChat Icon starving.

its very clear to us that dream feeding works.

my question is, what do i do when she doesnt want the dream bottle? has anyone else experienced this. when did you stop dream feeding?

Re: dream feeders-come in please

I had stopped at like 2.5 months. The past month or so he's been sick, and hasn't eaten enough during the day so would wake up at 3:30am for a bottle - so I started DF again at 10-11PM and now it's our routine. Only yesterday did he take enough during the day where I considered skipping the DF - but I didn't want to chance a 3am wakeup so we fed him anyway (he only takes like 3oz but it holds him over).
How much is she eating at bedtime, and what time is that?
When he was sick, unfortunately I had to feed him whenever he'd take it. I hope she feels better soon!

Feeding them in their sleep. Mainly to hold them over thru the night.

Interesting is this something that a lot of Mom's do? I have truly never heard of this - do you wake them up? You just put a bottle in their mouths while they are sleeping?

Interesting... you learn something new everyday!

when you dream feed, do you not burp the baby after? wouldn't burping wake them? I'm afraid he'll spit up in his sleep if I don't.

I nurse Jordana for her dream feed. She usually wakes up on her own around 10. If she doesn't, I just don't feed her. She has been fine.

Just last nigth I had an office x-mas party and had a few glasses of wine. When she woke up at 10:30, I gave her the pacifier and she went rigth back to sleep. She woke up around 7:15 and by the time I got out of bed, she put herself back to sleep and slept until I kissed her forehead at 8.

Re: dream feeders-come in please

I pick him up out of the crib, sit in the rocker and feed him while he's still asleep - he starts sucking and takes like 3-4 oz. I've only had to do this since he was sick and started teething and wasn't eating enough during the day. It helped us avoid a 3am wake up to eat. Then I burp him gently on my shoulder and put him back down. aCtually DH has started doing it for me, it's the easiest feeding of the day and he loves doing it.

Oh - I think the term "dream feed" is in the book The Baby Whisperer. She gives more info there.

Re: dream feeders-come in please

My other question on this is why would you just choose to pick your baby up and start feeding them? Either way YOU are getting up to feed them anyway, so what's the difference if they wake for it or not?

I'm just confused by this, I don't see how it actually works. Please don't take offense, I'm just trying to get an idea of the pro's of this... when it seems like all you're doing is disturbing a baby's sleep (JMO)

I don't have the Baby Whisperer book so I can't look it up myself otherwise I would! Chat Icon

I felt the same way about disturbing his sleep and did not do it after my ped recommended it months ago. Well my son is 8 1/2 months old and still waking 1-3 times a night to nurse - on his schedule. After another visit to the ped, we decided to try it and started the beginning of this week. We feed him at 10 before we go to bed. We simply pick him up, feed him, and put him back down. After three days he stopped waking after this feeding. He now sleeps through the night (with the exception of this feeding) and wakes at about 6am.

The difference is they get up to eat on your schedule. My son can't go 12 hours without eating, and my pediatrician did not recommend having him CIO or just stopping feeding him at night all together, so this was the best method for us. I have to say that I had my first night of 8 hours of sleep in a row last night in over 8 months so I think it is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Chat Icon

well, for us, at 3 months hannah did not sleep thru the night, but woke up at multiple times during the wee hours of the morning. it was very stressful b/c i NEED to sleep for a continuous amount of time and obviously, as the primary caregiver, i was getting none.

the baby whisperer book was helpful in that she recommended dream feeding as a way to "hold over" til the morning. it worked. as soon as we started dream feeding her she woke up around 6 am! total bliss. the nights that i dont dream feed she doesn't sleep thru the night. it might be coincidence or it might not.

as for the disturbing the sleep, thats why it is recommended to do it between 10-11 but no later than 11.

you really need to either read the book or do a web search to fully understand the mechanics of it all. i am not an expert by any means. but it works for us so thats why we do it. hannah is asleep, she never wakes up. she either takes the bottle and starts sucking or spits it out LOL!

Re: dream feeders-come in please

My friend does it and it works for her. She calls it "topping off." It doesn't work for DD because she will only eat when she is absoulutely starving and awakeChat Icon

Re: dream feeders-come in please

Okay, this will sound really weird, but my baby ONLY dream feeds - meaning, she will only take her bottle while she's asleep! When she's awake, all she wants to do is play, play, play! I've tried "starving" her to make her take her bottle while she's awake, but she'll only take enough to satisfy her hunger, like 2 oz. and then stop.

So, it has become a BAD HABIT of hers - started at 3m, I have to wait till she naps to feed her ALL THE TIME! At night, same thing. She'll wake up in the middle of the night, HUNGRY, in which I'll have to feed her and she'll sleep as she eats... she doesn't officially wake up till 7:30 in the morning though.

If she wasn't a preemie, I never would've DFed her in the first place. I continue it now, because, well, that's only way she'll eat and because I don't want her to lose weight.
