SEX OFFENDERS

How many of you check this list before purchasing a house? I just checked for this house I liked in Port Jefferson Station. WE drove around the neighborhood, it looked nice, etc... There are TWO offenders on this street. AHHHH I am not sure how far from the house, but would you buy on a street with offenders?

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

I do ALL the time and I'm not sure if I would buy on a block with a sex offender.

I did not look before we bought the house but I have looked since then. Luckily, none live close but there are some in my town. I would not buy a house knowing that they lived on my street or anywhere close, within a couple of blocks or so. Unfortunately, they are in most towns, so you just have to be aware of where they are living.

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

There was an article in Newsday recently about the clusters and that residents feel like they stick them in lower income areas because they don't complain as much, or even know about it. If you do a search on Newsday's site, you can find a map I think. There was one community forming a neighborhood coalition for that reason.

We have to consider where the town is going. We're not planning on moving out of the house we buy until retirement, if ever. So if other people aren't buying in a particular area because of an influx of sex offenders, that hurts the resale value down the road. It's something to think about.

So if there are "danger signs" that are getting worse - crime increasing, sex offender group homes increasing, a lot of commercial real estate up for rent for long periods - that kind of thing, we consider that also.

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

It's not really a low income area though, all nice big houses, well kept. That why I was surprised. Oh well, on to the next house i guess..

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

As soon as we decided on an area and specifically a house, I did some checking for sex offenders in the area.

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

I wouldn't look where the "cluster" areas are, but the fact is that there are sex offenders in almost every neighborhood.. and the ones you find on the websites are only the registered sex offenders, there are many more than those who are registered.

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

I do everytime I look for a house!! I would not live on a block or within a few blocks of a serious sex offender. The website offers info regarding the offense committed. There is a difference between a sex offense against a child and statutory rape of a 16 yo committed by an 18 yo. JMHO.

I totally understand where you are coming from but what if you buy a house and then they move in. They are in many different areas I fdon't think its that easy and you can never be assured one will not move in afterwards.

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

It's definetely scarey, and many of the offenders I looked up were older white males, offending little girls. CLASS D felony's , and only serving very short sentaces...sickening.

No - I would not purchase a home with even one sex offender on the block. It's just too close for comfort if you ask me. Same town probably wouldnt be as much of an issue for me - but same block is a little too close to home.

I agree - however a sex offender has a high liklihood they will be repeat offenders. I feel like you have the risk of unknown offenders everywhere, but to add a known offender puts the risk level over the top for me. Not sure if this makes sense or came out right!

Re: SEX OFFENDERS

I actually discovered that there was one on our block after we were in contract! Needless to say I was shocked and really upset, however my block is very long and the house is a mile and 1/2 away! I was also somewhat comforted by the fact that there are always tons of kids playing outside, which lead me to believe that everyone isn't scared or sheltering their kids form playing outside on the block! I love my house so much and do not think I wouldn't have purchased it if I found out prior (if it was next door maybe)!

We have one around the corner from us. He was not there when we bought the house. He married into the family.

I'll look, but honestly, this wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I would just want to be aware so I could keep any future children away from these people. They are all over the place--my sister has one on her block, another friend has one on her street. I just feel we'll never find anything if we rule out living anywhere near one. Plus, one could move to the block after we buy.

I do look at the school district, crime in the area, and environmental hazards. We've ruled out some towns we liked originally due to any of these 3 factors (loads of environmental hazards on LI too).
