Being housepoor?

Is it worth it? We were going to wait to buy a house, but we have come across a great house with a ton of property in the neighborhood that is move-in condition...

The seller is motivated because he is moving to Cali...

But our mortgage will be Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I am starting a new job freelancing in January and we can swing it, IF I stay working it will be no problem. If I have work only for the 6 months I am guaranteed, it will be TIGHT...

I grew up with nothing and penny-pinching wasn't the word for what my childhood was like...I never want my DD to feel like we don't have money.
I am scared.

Give me some advice...pretty please

Re: Being housepoor?

I would probably go for it. Home ownership is very important and this sounds like a great opportunity.

If it turns out you only have work for 6 months can you pick up something else for the other 6 months to help out? baby sitting, bartending, waitress, etc

I would...I just can't leave my industry for long. You are only as good as your last gig, ya know. I am even thinking about seeing if SIL would watch my DD for 2 days a week...and I do not like her at all...

Re: Being housepoor?

we are going to be housepoor as well.

but we both live at home right now - and we would rather not move out to rent an apartment for just a few years.

it will be tight for the first year or two, but we think its worth it.

Re: Being housepoor?

I know it's cliche and everyone says it, but you manage. After you get over the initial shock, you make it work.

Someone once said to me it's "house rich, life poor" Chat Icon You make sacrifices for your home...and it's worth it.

Chat Icon Good luck!

I think most people who are starting out are in this situation. Everyone I know with a house is living paycheck to paycheck. LIke someone else said, you make it work. Good luck! Chat Icon

I did this. I quit a job with no other job and I was closing on my house. Talk about stress.

We had $10K left in the bank when all was said and done.

But now we have more than that, we have good jobs that pay pretty well and the end result is that we are happy we did it. We ended up buying another property too so once you take the plunge and you see it's not that bad and things work out, you will be fine.

It always looks scarier on paper.

I'll be house po' too. It's worth it though, IMO, especially if you get a fixed rate mortgage. That way, your payments will always stay the same but your salary will (likely) go up. Eventually, the mortgage becomes more and more affordable.

Plus, it's a great investment. Probably the best you can make (again, JMO)

Same here. I was SO stressed about it but we've been in the house for a year and a half and we've been doing fine! Another cliche but it really does all work out.

Congrats on the house!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Being housepoor?

Kel...I know how you feel. I'm not working but Rob is (obviously). We put a bid in for a house a week ago and got it. We are signing the contract tomorrow and putting down 20,000Chat Icon. I'm just sooo nervous about getting by. I know that I need to work, tutor or watch other people's kids...something to make some money.

I can't believe how fast things are going too!! It's scary...but now is the time to do it. It's a buyer's market!!!

Re: Being housepoor?

I am not interested in being house poor. My husband and I like to shop , go out to dinner and travel. This is something that we discussed and we will not compromise on. So with that said, everyone's priorities are different. For you, it sounds like you would be able to live with your decision. Congrats! And good luck with the new house!Chat Icon
