Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
I hard;y ever ride the LIRR, but I was riding it with my friend, and we were coming off work and talking about our day, you have to talk over the runble of the train or whatever, and the woman in fornt of us just turned around and was like "Would you please be quiet, people are trying to sleep and read" but in a really nasty tone...and then all of these people clapped! I was like W T F?
Is it not allowed to talk on the LIRR? I admit, when I can't hear myself I can get very loud, like on a train, but when I want to sleep or read on the subway, I deal with the noise, I don't yell at people. Who says you have more of a right to sleep than I have a right to talk?
I'm sticking with the subway!

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
As a commuter I will tell you this - many people have to spend a very long long time on the train commuting to work. Sometimes you NEED that time to just read, reflect, sleep etc. If someone is talking very loudly, you cant do that. In general, people try to be courteous by keeping their voices down.
As a frequent rider I can tell you that it is possible to have a quiet conversation without bothering your fellow riders. But if you thought that you had to speak over the rumbling of the train, you were probably talking extremely loud, thereby disrupting everyone on the train.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
Sorry but I've got to go with the women if you were talking really loud.
Sleepers & talkers have equal rights, but if someone is talking so loud that no one can sleep the talker should lower their voice. I can sleep through anything so it wouldn't have bothered me. If the whole car clapped, you were being too loud -- and it was an AM train.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
I'm assuming that's what it was, because I thought I was talking at a normal volume.
I just can't believe how different the commuter culture is on the LIRR vs the Subway

People on the subway usually sleep with their eyes open because they are afraid of getting mugged.

It was coming home from work so it was probably around 11pm.
I'm not debating whehter or not I was too loud. I guess I was. But you would never see that scene happen on the subway. And she could have been nice about it.

Is it normal for an LIRR train to be silent?
I'm seriously asking.
I've actualy taken NJ transit much more than LIRR, and those trains are usually loud and hopping and everyone's talking and listening to music, there's no code of silence.
I sleep on the subway all the time!

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
As a subway rider, i am with the woman, although perhaps it wasn't nessesary for her to be nasty. A polite request to lower your voice would have been enough.
It is definitely rude to speak loud in a public place, be it LIRR, subway or store. The trains are full of tired people who just want to relax, read or just enjoy a quite moment and there is nothing more annoying that a couple of loud mouths yapping away right next to you. I speak form experience
Nobody wants to hear other people loud conversations. It is important to keep in mine that there are others around us

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
I'm not on LI, but I take the regional railway for the Philadelphia area, which is a lot like the LIRR... we also have a subway system, which is a world of difference... and I can say, when I'm on the train going home, it's my time to decompress from the day and there's truly nothing that irks me more than people who are having a loud conversation in my vicinity. I don't mind people who have a conversation, but as long as they keep it toned down. They even have signs on our trains telling people how to be "courteous" train riders, and at the top of the list it says "keep your voice down"... So, if the people around you clapped when she asked you to keep it down, I'd say you were being a little too loud...

I used to ride SEPTA (R7) all the time and it was never silent like the LIRR trains are.
I'm sure we were inadvertently talking too loud, but she could have been nice.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
maybe she was a little rude but since you dont ride everyday...you dont know what this woman goes through each ride....maybe you were just the straw that broke the camels back with her. She might have to hear people talking everyday and just got sick and tried of it...,
if you had to ride the train everyday with people talking loud...not able to sleep or relax....you would get ****** too!!

I was going to say this. You probably didn't realize how loud you were speaking. I mean, for other riders to clap, it had to be pretty annoying.

I was thinking this too. When I was riding the LIRR every day, you got a sense of who was a regular rider and knew the train ettiquette and who wasn't. And while I am not proud of it, I did sometimes have attitude about those who were not regular riders.
I also agree with Barbara - if other people were applauding, you were too loud. I used to come home at least once a week at 11:00 pm and would move into another car to get away from loud people.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
Is it the general culture of the trains to be really quiet?
I usually ride at night so I end up with like a madonna concert crowd or something.
Or I've been on the train on the weekends which is also a different crowd... this might have been a night I was coming home earlier so I was with regular commuter types.

I have commuted on NJ transit as well as LIRR very frequently since I used to live in central jersey. On weekday trains NJ transit is the same as the railroad. You probably rode during the weekend.
And yes it is normal for an LIRR weekday train to be silent. The weekends are much louder.

I don't know about that, but I think people are so resentful about how much $$ they have to pay for tickets that even small annoyances can set them off.

Again - were you riding on weekends or weekdays? peak rush hour trains, full of commuters who were being loud? I just dont see a bunch of business people coming off work being very loud.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
This is good to know.
It's so different from the subway. Are there other differences I should be aware of?
I was working near Penn Sta for awhile and realized I could be at the station in 15 min on the RR, rather than the hour on the subway

In general, I don't think the trains are very quiet. There are always groups of people chatting. In 10+ years of being a daily rider, I have seen maybe 3 or 4 instances where someone was asked to be quiet.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
I guess I have to be careful or bring something else to occupy me at night, because I work in the morning and then again at night, so when I'm coming home at 11 or midnight, I'm usually on a 2nd wind a hyper, so I need to wind down. I drive my own FH nuts.

Re: Spinoff: Talking on the LIRR
I have the same opinion as most of the girls stated so far. For this woman to get nasty with you and everyone to clap...I would imagine it was probably rather loud. I just know for myself when I am on a train and their is loud commotion I cant stand it esp for over an hr. People just have long days and want to sleep or relax. Dont take it to heart...I would just bring a magazine the next time.
