My cousin works in Stamford and she lives in Orangeburg/Old Tappan. It's NJ but it's an easy commute for her. Beautiful area.

Orange county may be a good move too. You will get lots o house for your money. My cousin is a realtor up there.

Eastchester, some parts of Dobbs Ferry and New Rochelle. Mamaroneck is a very old city but really nice.

Im moving to Orange (the exit of the woodbury common outlets) but that may be a stretch to CT.

Blu, what realtor does your cousin work for?

Westchester is pretty far north

It really depends where. My train ride is 35 minutes to Grand Central, and it takes under an hour to get to my parent's house in Bethpage.

As much as Rockland and Orange are very nice, I don't know if you want to mess with the Tappan Zee every morning. It can be a real mess, traffic-wise, and from what I've read, it's not the safest either- there's been talk of replacing it because of structural issues.

As for Putnam- someone mentioned the taxes being less. I live here and the taxes are not that much less- your commute to CT would be longer and you'd be spending more on gas.

Lots of nice options in Westchester, though- my doctor is in Mount Kisco- it's a cute little town, excellent schools, lovely homes. You'd end up commuting partly on 684 probably, which is nice- not as congested as most LI parkways, usually.

Re: Westchester?

We just moved to Bronxville. We bought a condo though and it is bronxville post office but yonkers city so we pay much cheaper taxes. Houses in Bronxville Village are very expensive with high taxes, but it is adorable. On the water, Larchmont, New Rochelle, Rye, and Mamaroneck all seem nice to me so far too.

Good Luck. I really like westchester so far!

Tarrytown and Mt. Vernon are nice too.

Although I agree that Mount Vernon is really nice, Mount Vernon School aren't very good.

If you are commuting to CT you might want to look at Somers or Golden's Bridge.

Re: Westchester?

but remember my DH still has to drive to Long Island

so too far north is out of the question

Westchester is really our only option to be fair for both of us

luckliy DH works off hours- 10 am to 9pm

so it isn't as much as an issue for him as it is for me

I appericate all the suggestions!

Re: Westchester?

What type of area are you looking for? These suggestions are all over the place. Someone who can afford Larchmont or Bedford would not even be considering Brewster or Mt. Vernon... Let me know if you have any specific questions or areas of interest. My sister lives in Westchester and is also a real estate agent there and my best friend also lives in Westchester. Oh yeah, and my husband works up there too.

Re: Westchester?

I used to live in Mount Vernon, on the Pelham border which is a nice area as is the Fleetwood area. The other side near the Bronx is not so great. Other areas such as Bronxville, New Rochelle, and Pelham are good options. Its lower Westchester so it should be quick to CT and LI. I could get to my mom's in Valley Stream in under 30 min when I lived there. There are other nice areas too that are a little further for your DH. White Plains is nice, so is Ardsley and Valhalla. It depends on what your looking for and what you can afford. Scardsale is gorgeous but big money. I could only live there if I won the lotto so its not the first neighborhood that pops in my mind to recommend.

Re: Westchester?

We have/are considering a move to Westchester as well. And our choices are in bold (We haven't seen much under $700K in lower Westchester with any kind of property):

Larchmont & Mamaroneck are nice & on the water-- I think less expensive than Rye. Portchester isn't great.

Towns on the Hudson, like Tarrytown, are a kinda far frpm CT.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

ETA- I have lived in Westchester for 6 years -Mt. Vernon, Scarsdale & am moving to Hartsdale

Towns on the Hudson we like: Croton, Harrison, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Ardsley

My friend lives in Rockland and commutes to Greenwich, so I don't think living on the river is a bad commute

Re: Westchester?

In terms of distance to LI, I don't think there's much of a difference between living in Fairfield County, CT and Westchester. However, if you're considering living in CT and if your DH is commuting to LI during rush hour, I wouldn't recommend living north of Stamford. I-95 South is the WORST commute going into Stamford. It can easily take 45 minutes to drive 10 miles. If he doesn't commute during rush hour, I'd check out Darien and Westport ($$$ but beautiful). There are beautiful, but $$$, towns south of Stamford that are on the water (Old Greenwich, Greenwich, Cos Cob).

I don't know what the commute to LI is like from Westchester, but I think Mamaroneck and Larchmont are nice.

Re: Westchester?

Westchester is amazing but the towns that are in lower Westchester are Very expensive, the houses and taxes can be extremely high and believe it or not more then Long Island. CT is great and in some areas close to NY the houses may be high but the taxes are less. There are some nice townhouses off of the 95 in Ct by exit 2 and 3 and they are on the water.

Tarrytown and Mt. Vernon are nice too.

IMO I would be very careful with Mount Vernon.

I currently live in the Fleetwood section of Mt Vernon. There are nice and bad parts of Mt Vernon. Fleetwood is the nice part it borders Bronxville. It is very commuter friendly and lot of young professionals live here and take the train to NYC everyday. We bought a co-op. Houses anywhere in lower Westchester are insane. You can get a decent deal on a co-op or condo.

Also I did the commute to Stamford, CT for 3 yrs. I am not going to lie. Sometimes it was horrible. When it rains or snows it will take you 1hr plus. Also Friday afternoon traffic going home stinks. However on good days you will get to Stamford 1/2 hr. It really is hit or miss but better than commuting from LI. FM me if you have any questions.
