Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
or were you asked how much you're making/how much you'd like to make?

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
I've never brought up money at an interview. I've always been told it's an inappropriate topic to bring up. However, most firms I've interviewed at have asked me either what I was making or what my salary expectations were.

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
thanks for your responses.
I'm having a 3rd interview this week... the interview process has been going on for almost a month now with this company. I've been dealing mostly with the woman in HR, but the interviews have been with execs.
money has not come up at all so far. So I was wondering if I should bring it up on this next one

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
I used to work in HR. Unless you're asked, it's best not to mention salary in a first interview. It's OK to mention salary if you are asked back for a second interview.
If you are directly asked, give a range of numbers.
Incidentally, one good place to look for estimates of what's expected, salary-wise, in your field is the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook handbook: Occupational Outlook Handbook

I never bring it up. They always ask me this question and I tell them the range I am looking for.

I think you can safely bring up the topic with HR by now-though I wouldn't bring it up with the execs.

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
I have never brought it up. I always knew the salary range going into the interview, but I never mentioned it to anyone I met with. I would wait until you get the job offer.

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
I knew the range going in since I have dealt with agencies mostly. After the final interview I discussed with the recruiter what I could expect. After the offer was made it was usually higher than originally projected although I think that's a game they play to get you excited to take the job.
I would ask the HR person. In fact, I would have asked after the second interview.

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
where salary is negotiable/unknown 1st one to bring up $$$$ "loses"
if employer is willing to pay X for a position and you state you want X-Y then you just screwed yourself out of Y. if you want X and employer states he/she is willing to pay X+Y then you just made an extra Y.
i despise the salary game
ETA: i usually go into interviews "knowing" what range they are willing to pay. if $$$ comes up in the first round it's a turn off to me, if i'm asked back for a second round i make sure i "know" what i'm dealing with...

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
Another point, if I'm not mistaken, you are looking out of state for a job and considering a relocation?
If so, you need to find this out. There is no game to play. You can't possibly move w/o knowing what you can expect.
I would certainly ask HR about the salary range if there is one. Otherwise, this is blind!

Re: Have you ever brought up money during an interview?
I went on 3 interviews too and even on the 3rd it wasn't discussed. I even said to the HR person that "I have no idea the ranges for the pay scale."
I think it depends on the situation, if they bring it up then of course you can state your intentions (but I usually try to get what THEIR range is first). But if it's a good interview and it would be awkward...then not.

I agree - do not bring up salary unless asked. (I am a career counselor, and advise on this issue on a daily basis). I also love the occupational outlook handbook, but keep in mind that the figures are based on national averages, not on the salaries/cost of living in the New York area. For more localized information you can check http://online.onetcenter.org/ or www.salary.com.
