The problem was someone came to the party sick. They should have stayed home.

This!

Unless they were one the “asymptomatic” people I hear about. If you feel even the slightest bit under the weather, you stay home!! I did that before covid. If I ever feel a little something starting, I cancel plans and stay in. It’s rude not to. Nothing like showing up to a party and you say hello to someone who is OBVIOUSLY sick. I’m always like wtf , fomo much?

Yep and people do it all the time. Come to school, work, parties, etc because they don't have the time to take off or don't want to miss a class or feel bad missing a birthday or such.
Everyone would have understood and now this person has to deal with all these people getting sick and the older couple who are not doing well.

Ya know. My DH is one of those. I refused to go to a family event because I was feeling a cold coming on and he was trying to make me feel guilty for missing it. I was like “they’ll be grateful I didn’t infect their whole house” and now with covid? Forget it. Feel bad for missing a party during a pandemic with a cough. Wtf is wrong w people

This is exactly why the stay at home orders were put in place. People are selfish and just do whatever they feel like without stopping to think about repercussions.

Their stay at home orders in TX have been lifted for quite awhile now but that still shouldn't mean if you feel sick you go around people. Especially now people should really think before they do things more than they ever did before.

I think that's the least surprising news so far.

I'm in a local single parent group and they're all starting to have parties/playdates at each other's houses. It's just a matter of time before it happens there, too.

So irresponsible. There is a 1-2 week lag for infection rates to show- NY may think its out of the woods when the virus is still circulating.. I dont understand why people arent taking this seriously, who wants to risk being one of the unfortunate souls who need hospital treatment and potentially a ventilator??

How is this irresponsible to have play dates when social gatherings are allowed. My kids are at daycare for past 3 weeks they do not even wear masks there...

And has there been massive spikes of children and daycare workers with the virus?

And in my state daycare was always open throughout this whole thing for children of essential employees (I assume maybe same in NY?) and never once was there an issue or outbreak.

Not that I am aware of. I don’t know of one Covid case in the building. It’s all about being vigilant. Extra hand washing, hand sanitizer, extra cleaning, stay home when sick. I just think it’s ridiculous to say it’s irresponsible to have a play date. Use your judgement. Ask the parent if they or anyone in the house is sick and if they were don’t have a play date with that family until 14 days have passed....

Yep. All common sense.
Staying locked up away from all humans for another 6 months is not really feasible for the majority

NY also has antibody testing included in the positive cases so it is deceiving.

So this is weird. DH had his yearly physical a few weeks back and got his script for the routine blood work. On the bottom of the script was a test for Covid antibodies. He did not ask for this test nor did the Dr discuss it with him.

Are they now just testing anyone who goes for any blood work for antibodies do you think? And then does that number go in as a "new" positive case?
(his came back negative but I"m curious now)

No clue but yes, it is added in to the positive cases. I thought that most people requested this but it sounds pretty shady to me if they are doing this to see if they can increase the numbers.
Everyone I know came back negative which was surprising as these are people who swore they had it late last year/early this year.

No one is trying to "inflate the numbers". They are trying to get a handle on just how many people are walking around with this disease so we can get a better handle on it. Enough with the conspiracy crap. Without TESTING we will never know just how far spread this is and we will NEVER get a handle on it. It makes PERFECT sense to test everyone in my opinion.

Can we stop labeling everything that goes against what we’re are told as a conspiracy? It’s so dismissive and it does not contribute anything with substance to a conversation. U’ve never questioned anything u’ve been told? Never been skeptic about anything? Ppl are not allowed to raise questions anymore? She has reasons to believe what she believes and so do u.

What a shame that they brought a kid with a cough, during COVID, to an indoor birthday party. Very poor judgement!

my children have been having play dates at peoples house!

when exactly will it be ok to start having them?

we are down its not going away so never again can they see their friends?

They are also going to camp this summer.

I am not tying to be snarky but I really want to know when we will be allowed to do things again?

It’s not up to anyone to tell you that you’re “allowed” to do these things. You can do what you want. But the virus is transmitting and will be for the foreseeable future. It’s not over just because numbers are down here. It hasn’t been eradicated. It may never be, who knows. So socializing is at everyone’s own risk.

People who are selfish and can't be inconvenienced will send their kids to school with a touch of something. We will be shut down again before we know it and no school for kids if behavior and trends don't change soon.

I read that one party goer sat outside for the whole party by herself, distanced, and still wound up in the hospital with it?

We will suffer because of selfish people and those who try to rationalize away selfishness.

We are in NY. I believe we are past our peak. Other states are not and should be more careful.

In NY, I think outdoor playdates with one child/family are ok. I also think it makes sense for us to reopen. Small get togethers are also ok. Our positive infection rate is only ~1%. That is really low at this point.

We handled this incorrectly, each state should have dealt with the pandemic and closing individually. We all kind of shut down at once, while some states were relatively unaffected. They are going to see their peak now. I don't think any will be affected as badly as NYC.

Bottom line, I think in NY we are past our peak and we've put our closure time in. Everyone I see here is wearing masks. I think we can stop freaking out.

Relax.

What does past our peak mean? Its not like it just died and went away. Its naive to think that we can't end up exactly where we were a few months ago if people aren't responsible. Yes things should be opening up and we should be trying to get back to normal but don't think its just gone forever.

What Rainy Day said. There is no way it's spiking in other places and NY reopens and it's not reintroduced largescale here.

We are all affected by one another. The conspiracy theorists, the hysterical, and the defiant? They are why we will lose lives and spike again.

Yes! We needed national leadership in Feb/March, but we didn’t get any. Instead, it was left to the states. We needed a reopening plan clearly defined by the national government, again we didn’t get it and it was left to the states.

Another peak CAN and will happen if people are not vigilant. I see in my neighborhood people are becoming more and more lax. This isn’t a one kid play date, this is 20+ 8th graders hanging out in and out of my neighbor’s house. A sample size of one family. Both his parents work outside of the home and they host large gatherings every weekend. Others in my neighborhood are doing the same so I will assume many others are as well which will increase the spread and cause a second wave in NY.

Texas just closed all bars and is putting stricter restrictions with restaurants.

Oh and look at that FL is now almost at 9,000.
Pretty weird how its the middle of summer and its now peaking in all these states. What happened to the virus will go away with warmer weather?

I thought that theory was disproved awhile ago. I think it is very obvious that what is happening in Texas, Florida, & Arizona, is a direct result of rapid reopening before the states had hit their peak. NY is doing incredibly well because of our slow reopening. I am 100% behind a slow and phased reopening plan. What I am not behind are people who make others feel bad for following the rules. Groups of 25 are now allowed statewide with the exception of NYC, which is at 10. So I do not feel I should be judged for allowing play dates and get togethers of up to 25 people. If this was done back in March/April/May, by all means, judge. But that is not the case here.
I am not saying this to you, just in general.

Not to quote everyone. I know can do what I want and I am but I keep seeing people thinking its crazy to have play dates or people are being selfish so my question was more when do people will think its actually acceptable because some clearly don't think it is.

"acceptable" is an opinion, so you're going to get a wide range of answers. I guess, technically, acceptable would be following the rules of your city/state. But everyone has their own thoughts about what they're personally comfortable doing.

Obviously, 18 people in that family in TX thought it was acceptable to have a surprise birthday party, and now they're all paying the price for their decision. But how many other people around the country are doing the same, and none are getting sick? Realistically, it's a cr*p shoot what's going to happen. I've seen articles about how it's not spread as quickly as people would have thought at the protests (most people wearing masks), but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a huge spike in a week from the Tulsa event b/c not many were wearing masks.

If you look at the charts in other states but NY, they really have not hit their peaks. They opened too quick and too soon and now they are hitting their peaks and having to close down businesses. They should have done as NY slowly and they would be in the same boat.

Re: Bday Party in Texas Infects 18 people w. Covid

I keep seeing people say we’ve “hit our peak” and have come back down, as though we don’t really have to worry now and the worst is behind us. That’s crap. We can easily hit an even higher peak in the second wave (as happened during flu the pandemic 100 years ago.. the second wave was way worse than the first). Having hit a peak already doesn’t mean much. It would take very little for this to spread rampantly in NY again... and I think in the fall it just might (I hope I’m very wrong and it never happens). Because even if 30%++ of the NY population has already had it, that leaves a whole lot of people (of the millions in crowded NY) who still have no antibodies ... and we’re learning it may even be possible to be reinfected and antibodies might not offer much protection anyway. I’m thrilled the numbers are down but i don’t think it’s close to being over. Also I’m not going to assume I won’t be among the unlucky percentage who need hospitalization or worse if I were to catch it... it’s just too unpredictable. I’m not saying nobody can go out or do anything... I’m just saying caution is just as important as ever.
