We’ve all heard the expression that “It’s better to give than to receive”. Well, according to experts, this may be truer than we’ve ever imagined. “Giving” to good causes may also contribute to building your teen’s sense of self. Experts suggest organizing family meeting to discuss what “issues” your teen has with the world at large and how he/she would like to make a difference. Devise a plan to implement and how you can all get involved in noteworthy causes…and don’t forget to discuss your accomplishments and progress.
Once you’ve brainstormed and agreed on a plan, post your vision statement in a place where the whole family can see it and be reminded of your personal and collaborative objectives.
Last, but certainly not least, set “the” example for your teens. If they witness you giving as a family, they will come to expect the same from each other and mostly from themselves. They will realize their efforts really matter.
