So, you don’t have the type of job/career that allows you to have the summer off, and/or perhaps you’re so busy (in your industry) that you can’t even take the time for a summer-time family vacation. And, you’re not too keen on leaving the “kids” all alone, for the summer. What are you’re options. Well, perhaps the school is offering interesting and educational outings that will keep them busy for at least a week, or you may know of another family (who you know and trust) that’s offered and is willing to include your child in their vacation.

Still, as a parent, it’s likely the sheer thought of entrusting your child to someone else has you a bit “skeptical”. And, who can blame you. But, making the decision to let your child go, and gaining confidence in your choice may mean confronting the school or other family.

While you “do” need to remain polite, diplomatic and non-accusatory, clearing the air and making certain “request” is well within the realm of reason.

Experts suggest starting off on a complimentary note, such as complimenting the school on such fabulous summer programs for kids with working parents, or by thanking the other couple/family for offering to include your youngster. Also make it clear that your child is very excited bout the opportunity and eagerly planning for the exciting excursion. Then note, that in order to better help him or her prepare you would like to clarify some rules and routines and know what the guidelines are. In the case of significant “issues”, simply have an adult discussion without sounding too critical. Remember, you can always reconsider letting your child go. In fact, experts suggest having a prepared list of non-negotiables as well as issues you are flexible on. And, above all, don’t feel guilty or apologize for proper precautions and good parenting. Your child may not thank you now, but he or she will, most likely, later.
