It seems that everyone is hopping on the home improvement band wagon these days. In fact, interior design has become “big” business and often requires big bucks. But, all too often home owners forget the appeal of curb appeal, which according to design experts is just as important, if not more so, in a sense, since that’s what people see (and judge) first.

But, again, we’re talking big bucks, or are we? According to experts you can make some inexpensive changes that can give your exterior instant glam appeal.

Here is what they suggest.

1. Reface your entrance: a new door can give others good “in-site” as to what they can expect from the inside. Replace your old door with an inexpensive door with personality in a custom colour that sets a tone and a mood.

2. Don’t shudder to think about shutters: Experts say adding shutters to an older home can give it character, charisma and charm. They suggest searcing in home improvement stores as well as in antique shops or hardware stores. Paint them with bold colours but ones that also have classic staying power.

3. Opt for accessories: Just like accessorizing an outfit, home accents can give your home personality. Think door knockers mailboxes, etc that aren’t too pricey but are home improvements that of curb appeal to your home. Experts suggest looking for and asking about tarnish-free products which will last much longer.

4. Tidy up your outside: Make sure your lawn is manicured and mowed, and that shrubs are neatly trimmed. Also make sure there’s a nice display of flowers, and that you shrubbery selection compliments you home. For instance if you have a country home, think window boxes and flowering plants, or choose trimmed spruces and trendy topiaries for a more contemporary abode.

5. Colour carefully: Choosing the right colours is another easy improvement to make. Neutrals and traditional colours are hot right now say experts and they rarely if ever go out of style. Make sure the colours you choose are timeless and classic (especially if you plan to sell) and choose carefully and wisely.

6. Luxury For Less: An “imitation” look can often be just as good as the real thing, at least according to experts. They suggest using Dura Slate in lieu of natural rock made from unbreakable polymer, plus it comes with a 50-year warranty. And, it’s cheaper per square foot, to boot.
