Interesting article in this month's Parents mag (april) re: cord blood banking debate
It went over the pros and cons. They spoke with genetic researchers who were honest about where they are with the use of cord blood and where they hope to go, as well as with the cord blood banks re: why they think it's a good idea. They had a list of questions you should ask before committing to a bank, as well as 2 public banks that waive their fees if your hospital doesn't already participate but your doctor may charge a fee.
My scanner's not working, otherwise I'd try to scan it for everyone. My aunt is a genetic researcher, and many of the points she went over with us were in there, so I feel like it's a pretty balanced presentation.

i did not becuase there was an article in newsday about how a couple who didnt have the money went ahead and bankedthe blood cord her son got sick and they thought they could use it for his sickness and was told that there was not enough of the stem cell and that they needed more. the article then says its optimal to have 2 or more children and it can be used. that alone was enough for me plus i feel theres not enough research out yet on it and will feel better probably by the 2nd child if more studies are done on this and show that it has helped children instead of stating it has.

I didn't do it after weeks of research. Too many negatives to spend all of that money. I read that these companies prey on PG womens emotions and make them feel guilty that if they don't do it they could be jeopardizing there child's life. Also, some of the companies when you call, the person on the other line gets a commission. They are constantly calling me and sending me things

Re: Interesting article in this month's Parents mag (april) re: cord blood banking debate
we're planning on donating the cord blood. That way it can hopefully be of use to someone, and if (god forbid) we need it, it may still be there for us or they'll find the closest match possible.
We don't have any genetic diseases in the family that would make more more likely to pay for a private bank.

I agree with this completely. Hubby and I also decided against it after weeks of research. I was surprised that my OB's were divided on this subject. 2 were for it, 2 were against it..........They still have so much more development to go in this particular field.

I did it - simply because if there comes a day (g-d forbid) we need it and it isn't there I could never forgive myself.
I hope it is the biggest waste of money ever!

I think we are going to donate publically. My doctor doesn't know much about the public donations... but I did some research and it seems to be the best compromise.

We donated Sarah's and will do so again. If it can help someone else that's great, but we don't have a family history of the diseases that they can currently use the cord blood for.
After talking with my aunt, we decided not to for other reasons also brought up in the article, like you bank the blood and they don't screen it until you want to use it to see if there are enough cells to use (most samples don't have enough) and they don't know how long they can keep the samples for.
But if we had a family history of blood disorders like leukemia, etc. we would have banked it.
One interesting point in the article was that all of the banks will waive their fees if you have someone in your family who needs the blood right away. I thought that was really nice.

I could see how this could happen but I know that when I banked my kid's blood, there was a full lab analysis done of the cord blood that was collected and a report was sent to me within weeks of my kids' births that told me the breakdown of what was collected and how much was collected and what it would be good for. I'm so sorry for that couple.
It's a personal choice to do this. I pray that I never EVER have a need for the cord blood and that it turns out to be a complete waste of money. In a way, you pray that it is a complete waste, but at least you have that option, God forbid you are ever put in a position where you need it. So you won't hear me complain about how costly it was because I pray that I never have to use it.
