Doing your Layette...

Is this like an "experience", or is it just something you do??

ETA: Maybe this question is more for the Jewish girls who don't have showers, and there is little to no buying anything before baby's arrival.

To preface, this is one of the only prep for the baby activities we are doing as there is no shower, etc. No one has bought any clothing for the baby as of yet.

I originally wanted to do it with my mom and MIL (I thought it would be nice) on one day we were out on LI. But, we are planning to come out this Sat-- but my mom is not around and my MIL is not available til dinner time.

Then we'll be out there Thanksgiving-- and I feel like Black Friday is NOT the day to do it.

Then the following weekend we'll be out there again for another occasion where doing the layette will NOT be appropriate.

So, basically-- we are schlepping out there basically like every weekend-- and I don't want to go out again just to do the layette. I want to do it out there, so my mom can pick it up and wash it when I am at the hospital.

Should DH and I just do it ourselves, or will it be a nice experience for me, my mom and MIL?? Does it really matter??

Re: Doing your Layette...

I guess it depends.....my DH looses patience after a few minutes. He would rather I buy, show him and then faint at the receipt.
Honestly, I did a lot of shopping on my own going to different stores and boutiques and picking things up as my pregnancy progressed. I went to the italian baby store by my house once with my mom and once out shopping.
My MIL I dont do anything with. It isn't something I would share with her

Re: Doing your Layette...

I don't know, I've never really heard of "doing" the layette....I guess I just figured I'd get some onesies and pjs and things here and there before the birth, enough to last us a bit, i know my mom and my MIL have already bought tons of clothes that they randomly pick up when they're out, which they'll bring by once the baby comes home. I never really thought of it as something to experience or do...I just thought of it as more little things that I need to pick up here and there, same as bottles and diapers and stuff.

That said if you want to make a day of it, I'm sure your mom and MIL would like that.

Re: Doing your Layette...

What exactly IS a Layette ???

Is it just a bunch of clothes for the newborn?

If that's the case, I'm not 'doing' a layette - but I rarely make a 'big thing' out of anything ..........

You basically go and pick out all the clothes you want for the first 3 months... For me, I would do boy and girl stuff since I don't know what I am having.

Once I have the baby, someone will call the store, and they will assemble everything and someone will go to pick it up for me, wash, then bring to my house or the hospital.

I think it's a mix of basic items and more fun stuff-- and it's an opportunity to pick out cute stuff and just shop for baby clothes... which I have not done at all since technically, according to Jewish superstition, you are not supposed to buy anything for the baby before they get here. I did buy one Jimmy Hendrix onesie, but I am not counting that!

I've never heard of shopping for clothes this way....I guess that's why I was always puzzled by your layette posts. Chat Icon Chat Icon But now I see what you're talking about. Yeah, I just figured like I said in my previous post that we'd have onesies and pjs galore in the very beginning and then our parents and everyone else would just buy us some and people would buy an outfit for him when they stop by to visit, and we'll just shop as we go along. I never heard of setting up the whole wardrobe for the first 3 months right off the bat. You'll def. be prepared though. Chat Icon

Oooohhh - Ok.
Hmmm, I was planning to pick up a few things on my own when I find out the sex. - But other than that, I'm sure my Mom, MIL, sister, SIL and the rest of my family will go crazy -

Re: Doing your Layette...

When I moved to NY, I had no clue what "going shopping for layette." My MIL did go with my SIL (my inlaws are Jewish.) I think in the Jewish culture (or at least the jewish girls I know) it is somewhat like a tradition.

I am having a shower given by my MIL. So I guess, whatever we need afterwards, we'll go shopping.

If I were in your shoes, It would be nice to go with your mom and mil. I would probably ask DH to stay home (Iknow my DH is impossible to shop with)

Re: Doing your Layette...

but a lot of stuff on that list you'll get at your shower.

JMO, but it seems like a big marketing scheme. I don't think you "need" to do a layette. A LOT of people will get you that stuff anyway for your shower, plus I've already received a ton of stuff on that so called "layette" list.

Maybe its a cultural thing. I know none of my friends or family have ever done the whole "layette" shopping thing.

But, in answer to your question, I don't forsee a place like Dennys being backed on Black Friday, so I do think you could go them.

As I said in my original post-- I am not having a shower, and people do not buy these kinds of things before the baby is here.

Some of the stuff on that list I think is not necessary-- of course I picked out bedding somewhere else, etc. It's really about clothing for the baby.

She's not having a shower. Many jewish women do not have showers (I'm not having one either).

With that said, I'm not planning on doing a layette, I'm fairly certain my Chat Icon will have more than enough for probably her first year!

Also, Randi... there is a Denny's in NJ in case you don't want to schlep to LI. I think it's in Paramus.

I know my Jewish friends family still bought stuff before the baby was born (maybe they don't give it until after the birth).

I know-- but, I want the one I do it at to be accessible for my mom since she will most likely be the one to pick it up, etc.

I am not sure if you do it at one store, they will have the same merchandise??

Typically you don't receive anything until the baby is born. Some people do not even bring a thing baby-related into the house.

With 2 months to go-- I am not aware of anyone buying a single thing for this kid.

It depends on your "level" of superstition. Most of my family who have had kids already never purchased one thing until afterwards. I absolutely will not bring one baby related item into my house until she has been born. The day before I come home from the hospital with her, my family will make sure I have what I absolutely need for her (place to sleep, washed clothes, etc..) everything else will come later.

I have purchased a couple of necessity clothing items, but again, have not brought them into my house. My mother has bought her tons of clothes already but she is holding onto them.

I'm doing the same exact thing... No shower (I'm also Jewish) and I'm not bringing anything baby related to the home till the baby is born. I know the moment I go to the hospital I'll be getting plents of gifts and clothes from family members. DH will probaby wash a few oncies b4 we get home and everything else should fall into place. Anything we buy b4 hand (only the big stuff like furniture, bedding, etc) will stay at my in-law's. Then, if it's a boy I'll get everything at the Briss or Girl... The Baby naming (and probably a lot of stuff b4 that)

Like you nothing is being brought into the house before the baby is born. I did a layette at Dennys with my mom and my sister. I'm not finding out what I'm having so we did one of each. I personally think the Plainview store has the best selection but obviously go to whichever store is easier for you. I think the only three that have a layette section is Plainview, Cedarhurst and Little Neck???? It was so much fun to pick all of the necessary items for the beginning months!!! If you can go with your mom that would be nice but not 100% necessary. To me it made it more exciting. Also...Denny's allows you to make appointments so black Friday should not be horrible as long as you have an appointment. Let me know if you have any questions. Good Luck!!!

Re: Doing your Layette...

I actually haven't bought any clothes for Chat Icon. My mom, on the other hand, has basically done a gender neutral layette for me. She keeps picking up things at various stores. I'm pretty much all set for at least the first few months. I know she'll buy even more once the baby is born and we know the sex.

It might be a nice gesture to shop for a layette with family members, but I don't think it's necessary.

I don't know that it's a big event that you need to make a special trip for, but that would be up to you how big an event you wanted it to be.

I didn't go yet, but I know Denny's gives a list of things that you may need for a Layette..there were not too many things to pick out imo.

Re: Doing your Layette...

To add, we're not doing a shower either, and not brining anything into the house, BUT, I'm wayyyyy to anal to not have anything on hand like essentials that we're definitely going to need the first few weeks, yes I'll be getting tons of gifts in those first few weeks, but I don't want to rely on that, and have DH run out every 5 minutes to get something we don't have....sooooo we bought, my parents, and my IL's bought a lot of things and we're keeping a bunch at their house as well as the trunks of our carsChat Icon yes she has more things at this point than I care to mention....I do agree that some of the things on Denny's list is just dumb and not necesserary, I had an appt, and ended up just picking up stuff that I knew I needed and not do the entire"layette" thing with them bc IMO it was wayyyyy too much and overkill.....

I went to the cedarhurst one that has a nice selection, but I hear the plainview one has a bigger one.....Chat Icon
