Re: Spinoff to my own post...

As a Nation, we should keep the registration for a Draft, and the option for a Draft available. However, right now, there is no need to call the Draft into action.
I'm not sure what you're getting at. Why would we institute the Draft now?

This.
As long as they have enough people who willingly join the military, there is no need for a draft.
There hasn't been a need in a long time.
If it got to the point it was needed, the government would reinstate it I'm sure

I’m not getting at anything. I’m sure a bunch of us have seen the movie Stoploss. DH fell into that group and was kept overseas way longer than he bargained for. If there was a draft the deployments would be shorter and fewer. Spread the burden.

OK, that's different than what I thought you were talking about. Yes, I've heard too many stories of soldiers doing multiple tours without any breaks.

That's not a Draft issue, that's a Military marketing/recruitment issue. They should focus on getting more people to enlist voluntarily. I don't know exactly how, but there has to be tons of ways to entice people to join.

The Draft should only be used in a war/emergency.

Not quite.
Stopping the draft was a purely political issue under Nixon.

Just basing it on https://www.military.com/join-military/everything-you-need-know-about-military-selective-service-system.html

The draft is officially known as the Selective Service. The Selective Service is a government bureau apart from the Department of Defense whose mission statement is: "To register men and maintain a system that, when authorized by the President and Congress, rapidly provides personnel in a fair and equitable manner while managing an alternative service program for conscientious objectors."

Basically, this means that if we ever have a national emergency or war that the all-volunteer military cannot adequately support, Congress and the president can reinstate the draft and force male citizens to serve in the military.

If you want, I can just add "I think..." in front of each sentence that I wrote.

I understood it as her asking if people should still register for the draft. You don’t always have to be the smartest person in the room, you can let some stuff go.

He can sometimes be pretty snarky with his comments though.

No, I don't think it's a necessity any more. We don't have hand to hand combat as the default anymore. Technology helps to eliminate the need to draft servicemen/women.

Fair enough, it's true sometimes. My tone sometimes gets lost in the post. I'm almost never intentionally mean to anyone.... which on occasion has annoyed people who were trying to get into arguments with me IRL.... Chat Icon

We also, frankly, have a population that is going to be much more resistant to it than generations past. I know a lot of parents who would protest and rail against one with every ounce of their being. I know others who see it as a badge of honor and a precursor to achievements in other fields.

But if we place our armed forces, teachers, healthcare workers, etc. in unnecessary danger/harm, and continue to pay most of them so little and fail to give them respect, we are going to have a big problem keeping society going.

Yeah, I tend to agree with this 100%.

I just realized I never answered my own question. I personally there should be a two year mandatory service obligation. I know that would never, ever happen but I really think it could change things for the better.
