Maybe they just cannot come to realize that their son is no longer a little boy. I don't know what else to say. All that matters is that the two of you know that you are mature adults.

For some reason I get the feeling that DHs parents have higher hopes for you and DH. But FIL could have handled it better. I dont blame you for being upset.
