 That is not at all untrue!
But, the stigma is real so if I can save someone from their resume being tossed (however ill informed on the interviewer's part) I feel the need to share

Thank you for the heads up, I now know that i should set up a new non aol email account if i should ever look for a job again!
But wow it sounds like you arent just saying that some people may feel that way but that you yourself would have the same assumption! That is quite an assumption! Why "should" someone update their email address if the one they have is working fine? And to assume that it means that their resume is less than stellar... I don't see the correlation.
To the OP I still use my aol email. I have one for fun that i have also had since I was like 18 (im now 43) and one that i use for professional purposes with just my name. I have never had issues with being considered spam or emails bounding back. I also have a gmail account for work and personally hate it!

I make sure the email address I make up for "official" things is professional sounding.
And email addresses are free, so there really isn't a good reason to not have a more business-friendly email account, based on the business in question.
However, a resume written in Comic Sans is grounds for IMMEDIATE shredding.....

It's a good lesson for people to realize that every aspect of their online presence can potentially make an impression on a prospective employer or on someone else. This is one aspect that I might not have thought of, but online presence in every respect is so seen and judged in ways people do not realize.

You are right and it was great for you to share. A tip that people may have not realized. Idk why people are getting so nutty about what you said. Missing a d@mn period can get your resume thrown in the trash.
If something as simple as signing up for a free gmail account can open more opportunities, then do it. It all depends on the role, industry, company, you never know. Personally, I don’t care but I worked with plenty of engineers who would comment on an email domain or the name. so yes very technology savvy people may judge. I feel like they are the worse critics. I had coworkers make fun of my hotmail account, all lighthearted but still people look at those trivial things.

Is yahoo ok?
Or does it only have to be gmail?
I have and msn.com email address for my personal email...
Is that acceptable?
They are all free so.....

My aol e-mail is the only personal e-mail I have besides my job one which is only for work. I've had aol e-mail since the late 90s so not sure if I read right that it was in 2004 when they opened to the public? Not sure what that meant but I have my aol e-mail address and it's my only e-mail since I was 18 and I'm now 42 lol. I know I sound dated when I give it away but think a lot of people my age are in the same boat.

There isn't a group or person who decides, technology is always changing. It's dependent on the market, trends, scalability. Gmail is free but I think its so popular and powerful because they have the cloud based tools you can use for sharing and collaborating. A lot of companies use G-suite. One point Facebook was cool, now it's for old people. Another example is Apple.

Me personally? No, I don't care what you use. For some, apparently it does matter. For me, in the IT field, I think everyone else in the IT field should have their own domain name.
People who judge a resume based on an email address are filtering based on trivial and meaningless reasons. But, if you have 100 resumes for 1 position, there are going to be a lot of trivial reasons to reject resumes.

Because the vast majority of professional environments do not use aol email addresses and someone who has consistently worked in a professional environment- at least in the industry I work in, would know that it was frowned upon.
Also, tons of companies use other Google platforms for business purposes. So, a familiarity with these platforms is necessary in many, many workplaces. A gmail account shows that you have at least some familiarity with the platform.

Also, people don't get hired for stupid reasons all the time. I had a boss who wouldn't hire a woman who wore open toed shoes to an interview. I don't mean flip flops, I mean a tasteful peep toe with a suit. Now, would closed toe have been more professional? Of course. But that always seemed ridiculous to me.
The best interview advice the same nutbag ever gave me (the bar is low, she was awful at advice) was to wear a unique piece of jewelry to an interview- something to show your personality. That's something I've always followed (and have not always gotten the job, so take it for what it's worth).

All of this. My previous job was a major University that employees thousands of people. We did not hire people with AOL email addresses on their resume. Not saying it is right, or correct, but there are businesses that do that. So just giving a heads up for anyone applying for a job. As someone else said, resumes can get tossed for missing a period.

I was so sad when I gave up my Blackberry for an iPhone. I think I was the last one and my DH thought I was being ridiculous.
OMG I loved my blackberries. I used to work at a company that had a Blackberry Server so the email was super easy that way. That was the big thing, having a Blackberry server at work.
I held out too long myself!
My first was the pearl. It was so tiny and each letter shared a key so typing on that was like learning short hand!!
But i got used to it and was good at it! I then moved on to the larger blackberry and having a full keyboard was a luxury!
ETA- this was my exact pearl. In pink too! Man I loved that thing!
