Yes. I taught myself to ride but haven't been on a bike in a long time. Don't own one. I have no interest in it.

We're in Queens and the two roads we would take to any of the bike paths are too busy for me...palms are sweaty just thinking about riding a bike on Woodhaven or Cross Bay Boulevards!

Yeah, I can't even entertain that thought. Only thing worse might be Queens Blvd. Yikes!

Just a random poll....

I've been riding since about 3rd grade. I almost never walked anywhere during college. I rode my bike all of the time.

Now, I still like riding, but it's much harder to find time and energy, especially since DC and DW don't ride.

Is there a reason you never taught your kids? Were they just not interested?
I thought as a kid, everyone rode bikes but I know at least one of my neighbor's kids don't ride & the oldest is 13. She says it is because we don't live in a bike riding neighborhood ( which is true.) You have to go on a trail, which is close, but kind of a pain to to take your bike there.

I spent many hours trying to teach them, but they had no interest in it, so I eventually gave up. Many of their friends don't know how to ride, either, so they don't have a social reason to try and ride.

Yes I do. Just don't do it often. Especially here in the city. I don't know how anyone rides a bike in here. And I see so many without helmets. Especially tourist renting bike. They're nuts!

I tried teaching my daughter. But she refused to wear a helmet. So I refused to let her ride.
She didn't learn till she was in her 20's.

I started riding again about 2.5 years ago after not being on a bike for over 30 years.

I ride 2-3 times a week. I stick to mountain bike trails or paved paths in parks. I refuse to ride on the road. There is a big push by the state to create more bike paths, which I applaud because road riding is just too dangerous.

If you do ride, PLEASE, PLEASE wear a helmet! Especially if you are riding with your kids. I see so many parents out riding without a helmet.

Yep. Since Kindergarten. I don't really ride anymore but I'd really love to get back into it once my DS is a little older and we can ride as a family.

Re: Can you ride a bicycle?

Yes and I love to ride. It helped me get rid of my spare tire (no pun intended.)

I actually just treated myself to a new bike on Friday!

I highly recommend it for exercise. It's like running without the impact.

Yes I have a road bike and ride in the summer as much as time allows and in the winter I just take spin classes. This year I will def get a trainer for my bike.

Not in years. Last time I rode a bike is when I was a teenager.

I live near the bethpage trail so I have rode from the Massapequa train station up to the park and back.

I have also done trails - Stillwell in Syosset mostly but that has been years. I went over my handle bars there once so I'm more cautious these days.

I have also done the path along the Wantagh Parkway

I wish I lived closer to something like that. My neighborhood has a "bike path" but it's really small and not really a bike path- it's more like a trail behind some houses that cuts through the development.
I find it annoying to just ride around the neighborhood and getting my bike on the car or in the car to go anywhere is a pain

Re: Can you ride a bicycle?

CLIMB (Concerned Long Island Mountain Bikers) maintains a number of trails here on the Island: CLIMB trails.

There are also several paved paths available. I have ridden at places like Bethpage State Park, Belmont Lake State Park, and Heckscher Park in Great River. There is also the Jones Beach Bikeway that goes from Jones Beach north along the Wantagh Parkway up to Cedar Creek Park in Seaford. And there is the Jones Beach to Tobay path on the northern side of Ocean Parkway. There are plans to expand that all of the way to Captree State Park.

If you have a fat bike, you can ride on the beach as well, although I wouldn't encourage that during the summer. I usually do that in the winter.

We drive to all of the places. Technically I can ride to the Bethpage one but I like starting at a certain point so we drive.
