Godparents...

I am so upset...we asked my Aunt and my Husbands cousin to be godparents to our dd. After asking them before my dd was born we just found out they were never confirmed. I am so upset because we didnt realize. They cried when we asked them to be the godparents..and both are practicing Catholics. Now we have to call and tell them that since one of them aren't confirmed they can't be.Chat Icon it's horrible to have to tell the people who have always been there for us and my kids. My aunt was married in a Catholic Church without being confirmed? I am so sad..our baptism is September 15th and there is not enough time for them to even take the class to get confirmed. Sorry I just needed to vent.Chat Icon

Can't one be a godparent and one a witness (in the eyes of the church) and still be godparents for you

Sorry to hear that!! Some Catholic Churches don't require that. I know mine didn't ask for anything from my dd's godparents. Did they ask you to prove it? We also got married in a Catholic Church, and my dh was never confirmed either. Gl Chat Icon

sorry to hear this. I do know some people that had Godparents that weren't confirmed... I think the church just never asked. Where are you located? Are you willing to go to a different church?

Our church asks the same of the god parents but 3 kids later over a 10 year span and I've never had to show proof.

I don't know where you are located, but St. Francis de Sales in Patchogue didn't have us supply proof...but the they stated that as long as one was confirmed the other was fine, but we were never asked to supply paperwork. When I asked if they would need proof for I was informed the only document they'd need is DS birth certificate.

My church didn't ask, didn't even meet my child's godparents until the day of the ceremony. I think all they cared about was if they were Catholic and would be good role models.
We went to St Raymond's in East Rockaway

I grew up in holy cross in nesconset. Try them, they didn't care that my dh wasn't confirmed when we got married. I have since switched to a church in shoreham bc it's closer to our house now. That's where dd was baptized and they didn't ask either. It's st marks.

Call the church and ask what kind of "proof" the Godparents have to bring to the ceremony. If they say they don't check, choose whoever you want!

When I called my church and asked what the requirements were for godparents, they told me baptized Christian over the age of 16. They were both baptized, but the godmother isn't catholic, so she is technically the Christian witness. They didn't ask for proof. The only thing they did was at the baptism class was ask if they were catholic. We went to st. Barnabas in bellmore. Isn't it crazy how all the churches are different?? You would think that it would be universal.

ITA. Just call and say you wanted to confirm that they have all of the necessary paperwork from you regarding your DC's baptism. Our church did not require any documentation.

All my church wanted was a letter from the godparents church stating they were parishioners. That was OLM in Hicksville.

I think many churches take it in good faith that the God parents are telling the truth that they meet the requirements, and possibly a letter from the church they attend regularly saying that they are practicing.

My church required proof of confirmation in order to get married. But only required DDs God Parents to sign a paper saying that they met the requirements (they were both members of the church we had DD baptized).

Did they ask you to show proof? We baptized at St. Agnes, the head of the Diocese and they never asked!

They asked us if both godparents were Catholic, but never checked up on it. If we have another, the godmother will not be Catholic.
