Spinoff to two topics: Going green and bottled water
I didn't mean to offend anyone.
What i meant to say was:
Can we please think about the amount of waste we produce? One place we can start is with plastic water bottles. They create a lot of waste and there are many alternatives.

I stopped using bottled water for that reason.
I have some rubbermaid style sports bottles that I refill for convenience and use a big washable cup at work.

I was concerned about this two - so once a week DH and I each buy a bottle of water and then we just keep refilling that one bottle. We have a filter on our tap and I have a water cooler at work. That's good enough for me!

At home, we have a Brita filtered pitcher, and a Pur faucet filter, depending on what we want the water for.
At work, we have an UltraViolet filter on the water dispenser (no bottles, it's hooked up to the water supply, and filter)

It takes less energy to recycle a bottle than to make a new one, but still uses a lot more energy than tap/filtered water.

The waste from the actual bottle is only part of the problem. You also have to factor in the energy used to make the bottles, the energy used by the plant to bottle the water, the fuel that is used to transport the bottles from the plant to the stores, the energy used by the stores, the fuel used by you to transport the water from the store to your house. Or the fuel used by the delivery truck to bring the bottles from the storage facility to your house.

I drink tap...  (I work for an env company that monitors water districts, so I can safely say the water I drink is fine!).
On the chance I am out and about, and buy a bottle of water, I will use it a few more times by filling it with tap water. I don't use it too much because of the bacteria that builds up.

We stopped using bottled water for this reason... At home we use brita and we have a nalgene bottle that we fill when we go out.

We use the brita. We buy bottled water every few months. I def. want to get some bottles to keep on hand in case of emergency, but otherwise, what a waste. What did we do 10 years ago?

I drink NYC's finest at home.
at work I drink from a water cooler, but I use the same 1 litre bottle day in and day out.
at home we have a few bottles we hold on to, but try to bring water with us when we go out instead of buying another.
I am really trying to reduce my waste and hopefully, my carbon footprint.

Yes, it's dishwasher safe and BPA-free. They come in about 9 different colors too

Yes, it's dishwasher safe and BPA-free. They come in about 9 different colors too
That is nice!
I have been a filter girl for a long time. I drink WAY TOO MUCH water a day to do bottled water.

If you are that concerned though, put a filter on your tap or in your fridge and use that. If you're going out then get reusable water bottle.
A water filtration system will not remove bacteria.
Last year me, my DH & our cat had stomach problems for a week. A week after that we received a letter from the town stating that there was a bacteria in the water and listed the symptoms (of which we had).
Needless to say we have moved to a bottled water household - cat & all.

my MIL boils our tap water and refills two gallon jugs with it.
our tap water is fine, but it makes her feel better. perhaps you could boil a big pot of water at night, if you wanted to free yourself from bottled water dependence

Perhaps after I churn my own butter I will.
Seriously though, it's one of my few vices...we buy the huge jug that has a tap and keep it in the fridge. At work I buy a bottle a day and reuse that throughout the day. I take many measures to reduce my carbon footprint so I am at peace with this.

we have a pyre in the backyard.
(I am partially serious...every weekend my neighbor holds a bonfire party in the backyard)

I'm sorry you got sick, but that was a one-time isolated event. I am sure whatever the source of the bacteria was was cleaned up and remediated immediately. The reason the bacteria was even found was because the water is being constanly tested. I would bet the bottled water you switched to is not constantly tested and is certainly not regulated like your town water.

we have a britta in our refrigerator and we drink diluted juice all day long (filtered water + juice) in reusable tupperware containers.

I understand that; my rational side totally does. However it's not worth it to me to find out again. Sorry.
I recycle, I compost, I use towels instead of papertowels 90% of the time...I'm a fish eating vegetarian (talk about taking up a huge carbon footprint, target the meat-eaters  )...I drive a fuel-efficient car.
Like I said, I am at peace with my decision.
