You could totally do really adorable cupcakes around a cake and impress. Make or order cupcake picks to stick in theme with the theme on it...

How about something "cheaper" like cookies etc made to match the theme.

At our party the cookies were a bigger hit then the cake.

Yes - my cookie platter was gone. You could call the place I used. They distribute to places like White Post Farms, but I believe they have a place in Brooklyn also. The cookies were outstanding!

I would never spend more then $50 on a cakeChat Icon It is not worth it to me.

Can you get a smaller, tamed down version?

I agree with the cookies and cupcakes. They were a bigger hit then the cake!

No. I just went through this... I really wanted the fondant because it was so pretty... but I went with butter cream and a scaled down version. It was $77 for a 1/2 sheet.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

I wouldn't spend the $150 and I would never think twice about a homemade cake or decorations!

I may be in the minority but I prefer homemade, a nice dense yellow cake from scratch with yummy filling, mmmm - no fancy fondant can top that! But then again, I grew up in a house where everything was done from scratch; getting a bakery cake was creating Chat Icon

If you want to do the Prince's planet, you could make 3 round cakes, stack them and then carve them into a half sphere and frost. Maybe print out a picture of the Prince and glue him on black foam core, then use toothpicks to hold the foamcore prince upright in the cake - you could even get fancy and make it two sided by printing a Prince in reverse. If you need more cake you could surround with cupcakes like you said Chat Icon

I wouldn't spend the money!

People are driving up to celebrate your son's birthday with him and your family. They are not driving up for the cake!!

I'd save the money and make the cake from scratch Chat Icon

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

No way! First of all, Luce won't even know the difference, more or less remember this birthday. Second, the point is to celebrate with family and friends the fact that you made it through the first year, not spend oodles of money on unnecessities. When I go to parties, I NEVER look at, or even remember the cake - what I remember is chatting with family and friends, and the memories of my kids playing with their friends.

I'm sure when Luce is 18 he will smile knowing mommy put that $150 into his college fund, rather than spend it on a cake that no one would remember! Chat Icon

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

Would I? Umm, probably if I loved it enough.

Would I regret it after the fact? Probably because it's so unnecessary and no one in my family is particularly dazzled by cake - they'd probably judge me for spending that much on one Chat Icon

honestly, people who love you for who you are would come to the party regardless of how "fancy" it is! If they were to judge me for that than I'd feel I have to re-examine our relationship. The party is to celebrate your child, and while it is nice to go all out, it doesn't have to be that way to be a wonderful celebration of his first year of life, which is what it is all about anyway! I think BJs makes wonderful cakes and I've used them 3-4 times. But, I think a homemade cake, when someone is able to bake, is a lovely gesture from a mother to her child. I've made my daughter's cakes each time.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

well, if i told you how much i spent on the grooms cake for DH at mt wedding you would prob die...Chat Icon Chat Icon

BUT that was back when I didnt own a house, had no kids, and was working 3 jobs...I could afford it back then.

these days $150 could go a long way and to spend it on a cake is just silly to me. Honestly, BJ's and Costco have the best tasting cakes IMO. I would go for one of those...cakes are meant to be eaten Chat Icon

Regarding your guests being dissapointed..they have NO reason to be! I by FAR prefer homemade food at a party! And based on your posts I see on the food and recipes board it sounds like your food is far better than anything catered anyway!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

I don't think you should spend it because of the anxiety it is causing you. I am not someone who spends that kind of money on a cake. I know some people do and they usually look and taste fabulous, but it's not important enough to me to lay out that kind of cash for a cake.

Also, I go to family parties to see my family. Some people do them better, some people have amazing food, some not so much. But in the end, I have a great time at all of them, because I have the opportunity to sit down and spend time with my family, which doesn't happen as often as I would like it to.

Relax, make the cake and enjoy the party. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - if you don't belong to Costco or BJs, a lot of the supermarket bakeries do sheet or half sheet cakes too if you want to buy one.

ETA2- from what I read of your cooking and food posts, I would probably be too full of great food to even eat the cake. Chat Icon

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

DS's 1st bday -we were themeless, favorless, gameless, clownless, and centerpieceless. Well maybe the theme was "WE SURVIVED" but it was very subtle Chat Icon It was 3 hours with great food, great music, lots of family and an open bar. It freakin' rocked. A $60 sheet cake served its purpose and was delicious. I applaud all the amazing "party people" in the house; it's just not my thing Chat Icon
Events are always about resource allocation, you have a finite amount of both time and money, so there's usually a way to supplement one with the other kwim? A homemade cake is perfect for the occasion and no guest would give it a second thought!

First off whoever thinks it's just a run of the mill party b/c you have homemade everything is just an a$s!

Second, if it's something you can't afford, then don't do it! Besides not everyone even eats the damn thingChat Icon Cake is probably the most wasted thing at parties IMO

Was the theme a Space party? something like that?

What about getting a picture and having it scanned onto a cake? Maybe Costco or BJs can do this. I can't see it being THAT expensive!!

Costco makes a mean cake and we just had a really cute princess one done for Bella at Stop and Shop.

You are NOT cheap for not wanting to spend 150 bucks...and I sent out a custom invite for a run of the mill gym party and it fine. It's more the company than the cake Chat Icon

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

No, I would not. I bought DD's 1st birthday cake from a local bakery...I think it was like $60....they messed up the decoration, and the cake wasn't very good....Her 2nd birthday I MADE the ladybug cake (Wilton pan and directions from Michaels)...her 3rd birthday a great friend made cupcakes and we put themed toppers on them.

I can tell you at her 1st bday no one said ANYTHING about the cake...Her 2nd and 3rd, they raved about them, and were amazed that they were homemade!!

If you want to buy a cake, I'd take the invite to Stop and shop/waldbaums/king kullen and see if they can scan it on for you.

Otherwise, I say bake the cake yourself, ice it and decorate it how you wish...put an invite on the cake and remove it before people eat...attach toothpicks to the invite and have it like a banner IN the cake...find theme related toppers...Just write "Happy birthday to OUR PETIT PRINCE" and use the party colors....Guaranteed people will LOVE it no matter what!

My best friend has made her DS's birthday cakes every year for 5 years...and she was NOT "domestic" at all...she just decided that she wanted to give him that "labor of love" each year...and she's made some GREAT cakes (Diego, Puppy Dogs, Dinosaurs, Transformers and Rock Star Guitar)

What if you had a BJs sheet cake with a scanned picture of the invite (or other theme related artwork) put on it? That way the cake is cheaper, not homemade, and still keeps within the theme?

Exactly what I was gonna say. All over the internet they sell edible images that lay over a sheet cake and sort of melt in. You can get the sheet cake at bjs and then order a custom image.

No way, don't do it. Spend the money on something else.

I only plan on spending about $150 on my sons whole birthday party!

I wouldn't spend $150 on one of my kids birthday cakes. I wouldn't even worry about it..your guest are coming to celebrate with you and your LO, not for a fancy cake.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?

I've spent it on special occasions like first birthdays, christenings. For a regular birthday I would get cake from carvel, baskin robbins, costco and would spend anywhere from $25-$75 due to amount of people and where I'll get the cake (for just regular birthdays). After all the planning the last thing I want to do is bake a cake! I don't believe anyone would ever think that because you sent a custom invite you should have a custom cake. I personally love to hear when cakes are homemade and if it taste good that's all that matters! If you're not up to baking try your local grocery store. Stop n Shop makes great birthday cakes.
