Would you let your son do this?

My son is 4 1/2yo and is a HUGE fan of the Fresh Beat Band. Yes, we are going to see them in a few weeks.

My ? is...would you let your son take dance classes? I'm not opposed to it. But I am sure he would be the only boy in a dance class surrounded by adorable little girls. It's not something I would do if he just mentioned it to me once but he is INSISTENT on it. He has always loved to dance/sing etc. and now all he talks about is wanting to dance.

Absolutely!!! I danced throughout my childhood and there were always a handful of boys in the recitals.

Re: Would you let your son do this?

I would let my son do it only if I could find a class geared to both sexes and had at least one other boy in it.

Re: Would you let your son do this?

I would.

He is 4.5.

If as he gets older he notices he is the only boy and HE feels uncomfortable then he can stop going.

I might try to look into coed classes but I am guessing they are few are far between.

If it makes you feel better professional football players take dance classes to help them play better.

I was going to say, I have heard of schools having boy dance classes. I think my sister said my nieces dance school does a boy hip hop class. Not 100% sure about that though.

My son is 2.5 and also loves FBB! He pretends to break dance on the floor whenever a song with a good beat comes on. I would absolutely send him to dance school but one that has all boy classes geared toward hip hop. I found this one. . I heard good things about it and they have both coed or all boys classes. I might do a trial class with him when he's the right age to see how it goes. He'll be 3 by the summer, and I'm off, so I was even thinking of signing him up for a summer session. (if they had that)

There are a huge number of male dancers in the world. If he enjoys it, I would definitely let him do it. Dancing will help him with pretty much any other sport, if he decides to switch later on. He'll learn to be flexible, light on his feet, improve his balance, be in better shape, etc. All of those skills will be useful in any other physical sport.

Re: Would you let your son do this?

There are a few boys in my SIL's dance school and they are AWESOME! one of them often wears the shirt "Boys dance too!" to class. There may be ridicule from other kids eventually so you need to prepare yourself and your child for that...but if it's what he really wants to do I say go for it!

I would if that's what he wanted to do. I think dance is becoming much bigger, there are so many dance shows on TV for adults and kids these days. I think there are a lot more boys who are interested. My nephew took dance class for a while and he loved it. Now his thing is football.

Re: Would you let your son do this?

Yep my brother took dance for a few years when he was young. He's very manly owns a construction company, and rides a motorcycle! He is as rough a rugged as they come. I would totally let my ds take dance if I had a ds.

Re: Would you let your son do this?

Yes. If he expressed an interest, I would sign him up for classes.

My husband wanted to take dance when he was a little boy. His sisters did it, and his mom encouraged it. But his father wouldn't allow it. All these years later, he still remembers that and it bothers him.

I don't want my son to grow up and resent me for not letting him at least try something he showed a clear interest in (assuming it's not harmful to him).

I would totally let him. Especially at 4.5 yrs old. If he begins to feel self-conscious about being one of the few boys as he gets older, he simply won't want to continue.
