Correct! It certainly was not leadership.
It was a headline creating move done by two pandering politicians who are each looking ahead at possible presidential runs and want to look like leaders. They could see that the general public''s ignorance about the way Ebola is transmitted was causing many to panic, so decided to grandstand for their own political benefit.

Their decision was not based on science and will be damaging to the effort to fight Ebola. It will discourage people in the medical field from going to Africa to help fight Ebola, which is what is dearly needed right now if this disease is to be contained.

Who would want to go there, if when they got back they were forced into quarantine? Who is going to fight this awful disease at it source if they are going to be punished for their courage?

Keeping track of people and having them follow strict self-monitoring guidelines makes far more sense.

See to me, if I were going over to help in west Africa, I would EXPECT to be quarantined upon return. I wouldn't see it as punishment, but as a logical and necessary precaution.

I think this particular nurse is so ticked because of the timing. It went into effect suddenly just as she was returning, so it's not like she had any warning. I wouldn't be thrilled if I were in her shoes, but I'd certainly understand and accept it.

It's actually the best thing for them because it guarantees early detection, and we've been giving the healthcare workers top notch care.

They have to have known that they were putting themselves at risk for contracting it when they left.

We should use aid money received to compensate them, keep them comfortable, and treat those stricken.

But all who return from the areas should be held---the honor system will not protect society.

The Doctors Without Borders nurse being quarantined in NJ is in an outdoor isolation tent with a portapotty and no shower. Does anyone really think this is the way to treat people?? This is an American citizen who selflessly went to Africa to help others...she isn't a criminal or a felon. Even they are getting better treatment right now!!!!

Re: woohoo! Christie and Cuomo - Mandatory Quarantine for High-Risk people traveling from Ebola Countries to NY/NJ!!!

I believe that all of the drs/nurses returning from Africa who had contact with Ebola patients were always told to not return to work for 21 days. So in theory, this quarantine is to ensure they don't travel on mass transportation, go to crowded areas, etc. I can see why this was enacted. The public has lost its faith that these drs/nurses will use their common sense after exposure to ebola and not fly commercially, take the subway, go bowling, go on a cruise ship, etc (especially if they are feeling "off" - even if a fever has not developed).

That being said, I don't see why they have that nurse in an outdoor tent (is it heated???) without a shower and a functioning toilet. Really? That is the best they can do for someone who really risked their life to help save people's lives??

She doesn't even have a shower. She is being forced to take sponge baths. This is ridiculous.

The science is clear about how this disease is transmitted, unlike flu or the common cold, it is not airborne. It is only transmitted by bodily fluids when the patient is very sick and having symptoms - throwing up, diarrhea or bleeding. Unless you get their vomit, diarrhea or blood on you, you are safe. No one in the family of the man who died in Texas got it.

Putting people who volunteer to fight this terrible disease in quarantine for three weeks will absolutely result in dropping the number of future volunteers, exactly when we need more of them to control its spread.

Ita!! Thank you for serving the greater good but there's a lot at stake, and it's just part of the even greater good in protecting your fellow citizens.

But, if someone is not vomiting, having diarrhea or bleeding you would not be at risk.

What is at stake, and people are having a hard time understanding it, is that we need people to go to Africa to fight this disease where it originated. If it gets out of hand there, it will spread worldwide. The Sunday morning news shows had all sorts of health and medical experts making exactly this argument today. They were uniformly against a quarantine as until someone get a fever and starts vomiting, etc they are not contagious. It is not an airborne disease. People are not going to catch it on the subway or at a bowling alley the way enterovirus can be spread.

The experts were all in favor of closely monitoring returning healthcare workers and having them self-monitor by taking their temps twice a day for 21 days. Which makes sense.

They need to treat the quarantined people better if that is true the nurse is in a tent. Maybe that was just a temporary shelter until they found a more suitable one. My next question is, do they know how ebola will react to a colder climate? Can it mutate now that it is out of Africa where it is warm?

If the Ebola health care workers had shown themselves to be responsible in their self-monitoring instead of doing tours on planes, cruises, subways, etc, then perhaps there would not be a need for quarantine.

I understand at the time they may have been asymptomatic, however the fact is that you never know when that moment will be when you go from having no symptoms to having symptoms. You never know where you are going to sweat, vomit, or bleed. You don't.

The treatment of the NJ nurse is ridiculous. Not sure WTF is going on there.

I agree, That's why I said that the aid $$ should be used to keep them compensated and comfortable--not what's going on now. The only part I agreed with was the quarantine. Not sure why all the drama when most of us seem to agree.

That is just disgusting. I just read that she is in an unheated room with only paper scrubs to wear. REALLY? For goodness sake, she is not a criminal (although even criminals get heat right?). She does not currently have Ebola. This is how we treat selfless humans who put themselves in harm's way for others?

They better remedy this right away. Quarantines and local reactions do nothing to end the large scale problem of ebola. The only way to do that is to stop ebola at the source (West Africa), and to do that, they need people (like this nurse) to keep going over there to help! Who is going to want to go if they know they will be stuck in an unheated tent without running water for 21 days upon return?

The morning news shows showed photos of the tent the poor woman is in.

It is huge and circular, and set up like a hospital, but it is a tent, nonetheless. She's been badly treated. She was made to wait for hours at the airport without food when she first got here, taken off to quarantine and was not told what was going on and why she had to live in a tent. All of which is unacceptable.

More people have died here from Enterovirus which is airborne and in more than 40 states, yet it is not being handled like this.

"Kaci Hickox, a nurse placed under mandatory quarantine in New Jersey, says "to quarantine someone without a better plan in place, without more forethought, is just preposterous."

Her treatment has been a disgrace! Cuomo and Christie are idiots who did not think this through before rushing to be the first to get something done. I believe they acted solely for political reasons.

I think the federal government should be doing a little more to monitor everything (like how in the hell wasn't there a plan already in place for something like this?!?) but I do not think what Christie and Cuomo did is constitutional. Do I want people spreading Ebola all over NY, NO! But I don't think the risk is large enough that it warrants keeping people in an outdoor area with a porta potty and no running water for 3 weeks! We treat convicted CRIMINALS in prison better than that!!! Who thought that would be acceptable?!?

ETA: why can't she go home and be forced to stay there? Why does she have to be in a tent at the hosptial? Duncan was sent home sick and didn't infect any of his family members. And assigning a guard to sit outside her house and make sure she doesn't leave has to be cheaper than the entire set-up they have going at the hospital.

And even being forced to stay home under a guards watch is a bit questionable...there has to be a better way to make these people act responsibly while keeping some semblance of freedom.

A zillion times this! It's fuckign insane and panders to people being afraid of something they REFUSE to understand. We need to be more concerned about the 10,000 people who've already died in West Africa and all those people close to them who may have been exposed. This country can be so selfish. It's disgusting.

The way they rolled out the quarantine was completely half-assed, I think we can all agree with that. But, I think anyone who was treating infected people or had any direct contact with the people in the areas most affected should expect some sort of quarantine when they come back to the states. Of course, that should include comfortable accommodations, not a tent behind some hospital.

I don't see it as selfish of the US to want to protect it's people. Perhaps a quarantine will deter other healthcare workers from traveling overseas to help, but that can't be our top priority. We need to protect ourselves somehow and it looks like the ridiculous temp monitoring and questionnaires at the airports are obviously ineffective.

For people criticizing Christie and Cuomo, what alternative would you suggest? Whether it be at a hospital or their home, these people should be quarantined in some way. And not just "self monitored."

I'm all for the ban but disgusted at how this poor nurse is being treated- they should have had a better plan in place- they couldnt take her to one of the designated ebola care centers- there are a couple in NYC and even North Shore in Manhasset- I don't know if there are any in NJ- but to make someone sleep in a tent with no heat is a disgraceful thing to do.

She has every right to sue the shit out of NJ for this when she is done

Yes and no.

Yes I agree its a terrible idea.
No, because this is what the public has been pushing for hard. There are some who would not see the truth of how bad an idea is until it's played out. It is unfortunate that this had to come to this point but in a twisted way, its good that it will prove to be what it is. A bad idea.

Its been pushed so hard about contact and not what KIND OF contact that this is the next 'logical' step. Ironically we did this years ago with AIDS remember? Before we were better educated we feared them, exiled them and if given a chance would have quarantined them.

I have actually heard of studies which suggest that the virus may go airborne when in a cooler, less humid environment. They really don't seem to know though. Here is a link to an article and the study on it:
