If they don't reopen in the fall then I will move to a state where the schools are open. We also own two other properties where we could register our children for school so I would consider relocating to either one of those temporarily. There is no way I will stay on Long Island/in NY if most of the world is open and we are remaining closed. I am starting to hate Cuomo.
Wuhan, where this all started was closed completely for 79 calendar days. When it reopened, schools remained closed. Schools in New York have been closed for 34 school days, (44 calendar days) and New York has been "paused" for 28 business days (37 calendar days).
Watching all the places overseas that have reopened and then watched their numbers rise, and their death tolls increased is heartbreaking. Watching the daily death toll in New York is heartbreaking. I would hate to watch it go back up because we took our foot off the brake without watching where we were going.
My school district will have been closed 180 days by the time the first day of school rolls around if they don’t reopen before this school year is over. That almost 6 months. If we can’t reopen then but the rest of the country is open, I will move. 6 months is a long time to let this play out. They already think over 15% of people have had it and have some immunity.

Exactly. But we have no say.
We are prisoners of the state. They can just raise taxes continuously while taking away services and we have to pay it.
We have no recourse. We have no say.
The thought of this being a free country is just an illusion.
They can do whatever they want.
They can keep schools closed for 2 more years
They can keep the economy shut down indefinitely .
They can keep us locked up like prisoners for years.
And we are powerless to stop it.
It's scary and disturbing

8:20-8:45 I am posting the day's agenda and classwork, and emailing parents reminders for their child's small group Zoom meetings.
8:45-12 I am on Zoom. Morning Meeting with my 2nd graders, then Social Studies with them, and then a small group reading intervention, and then Math.
The rest of the day is spent grading yesterday's work and giving feedback, reaching out to families of students who I haven't heard much from this week, available for 1:1 Zooms for students who are struggling, a meeting with my colleague, and then getting materials ready to go for tomorrow.
If schools reopen and your child can only attend Monday, Wednesday, Friday, someone else's child will be there Tuesday and Thursday. Your child's teacher will be there Monday-Friday, for the full day working.

I am in westchester.
My child is in K and the teachers are only working 9-11
Even the online curriculum is being updated like once a week , as to what we are expected do
My other child has severe impact as he is not a candidate for tele anything
At this point I am so frustrated - let them lay off everyone then including the teachers and let’s see when they want to open .
So fed up if I have to do the teaching why I need to be paying anything
Even if it’s not popular that’s my opinion.
And Cuomo said everyone has to stay open just to provide meals for kids during the Easter break . Or their funding could be cut off ..

My school superintendent does videos every week and he said he doesn't think the kids will go back to school this year. He did not mention anything about September.
In his video he mentioned how the district is one of the best, etc and if we don't get our funding from the state we are $2.6 million dollars in the hole. I assume it could be more if residents cannot pay their property taxes.

The closure has led to some savings (photocopying, electricity, transportation, etc) but, state aid has also been cut at the same time as funds were shifted towards combatting coronavirus.
Even though there is some savings this year that can be rolled into next - schools are facing a huge cut in state aid.
On top of that - even in a good year, medical and benefits expenses continue to rise.
I attended a few of our Zoom School Board meetings. They are just trying to put a budget together where they can come back with the same programs they had (or were supposed to have) this year.

Right, I'm not saying teachers aren't working, and probably working even harder now than they were before but how can the school district and the state justify the current tax bill when many of your coworkers or support aid will be gone, extras cut, and kids may only be in an actual classroom part of the week and online the other days? It's not like they'll be giving teachers a raise for the extra work they'll be doing to compensate. And let's be honest, the likelihood is that taxes will be raised even higher for less services. And what about incoming kindergarteners? This should be their first experience of school? Again that's not directed at teachers, I know they're doing the best they can with what they have, just expressing frustration at the situation. But I have to imagine many teachers are also annoyed that their own kids aren't really learning right now either.

So now you have to pay for a sitter AND pay astronomical school taxes every year. I think if that’s the case, the people with school aged children should get a tax break to help cover for child care. school is important for learning and growing as a human, but it’s also child care for working parents. Especially when they are too little to stay home alone. I can’t see spending $1200 a month on property tax (which is mostly school taxes) and then have to shell out $$$$ for child care on their days off. It’s going to KILL the middle class
I was talking to my friend about this today. I have a first grader and a son in pre-k. He goes to kiddie academy and my 1st grader did aftercare there. As of now we are paying $25/week just to hold our spot. If my husband goes back to work and schools have not reopened it’s going to cost me $500/week to send them there. Which will make it barely worthwhile to work. Obviously we would do it and hope it’s a short term thing. But it will definitely create a financial burden...
That's my biggest problem with this. This is going to result in women leaving the workplace in droves because one of 2 things will happen:
1. Women are already paid less on average so if one parents is going to quit to care for their child because school is closed and they have no choice, it's likely to be the mother.
2. Childcare is more likely to fall to women so those working from home will be unable to adequately tend to her career while also caring for her children.
Yes, I am having real difficulties trying to WFH with the kids around, plus trying to work with all the therapies my son gets. I don't know how I'm going to be able to do this long term.

And I hate to say this, but having half capacity classrooms etc isn't going to do a damn thing to stop this virus from spreading in schools.
Kids are gross.
They touch things
They dont' wash their hands enough or well enough
They aren't cognizant of things like adults are- things like not touching their face, not putting hands in mouth, etc.
My daughter is 9 and I still have to yell at her in stores to STOP TOUCHING EVERYTHING
Forget it when they are even younger.
Do you really think anyone is going to be able to control every move these kids make to keep them far enough apart?
I don't see how it will do any good except to give a false sense of security.
I truly believe many kids had this already before they shut down the schools. My daughter had a dry cough for a month. It presents in kids much like a common cold and is very rare to be serious enough to even think to see a doctor.
Trust me, it probably spread before and will spread again once they are back- even if they do split weeks, half remote and all the other nonsense

I was talking to a friend who is a NYC teacher (I am in NYC schools too). She said her UFT rep is saying school won't be back to normal until January- then DH (who works in a hospital) said in January, it will be bad again because the virus is expected to upswing again with flu season--- but IDK.
She said the UFT rep said they are talking alternating schedules, lunch in classroom, still doing some remote learning, no specials, masks being worn ..it's a logistical nightmare. For the kids, for the parents, for the teachers...
I honestly would rather Cuomo with his "doom and gloom" rather than giving us false hope. I think he does it because if he says that things are better, people will ignore the rules and we'll have more cases. People are still getting sick. The hospitals are better able to handle cases now- but people are still being infected- even with all the rules in place. All I hear now is "two weeks until life is back to normal somewhat"-- that's not true and if that happens, the infection rate will spike and we'll be right back where we are.

See this is what I m confused about and may be someone can answer me.
Your DH and other medical professionals are saying there will be a spike in January, which, makes perfect sense. It seems regardless there is going to be a spike, there is no avoiding it. If we already started to relieve the stress on the medical community , shouldn’t things start slowly opening up in the summer? I’m obviously not a medical expert, but, wouldn’t it be better to deal with the spike during the summer as opposed to the height of Flu, Strep, and cold season? Let people start building some immunity over the summer who are asymptomatic or have minor symptoms? Especially predominant healthy kids?
Another honest questions, can part of the reason for increase in deaths during this time is because there is a combo of Flu-Strep-Covid illnesses? Like if this happened in the summer would the numbers be the same ?
I find it hard to believe that this year was one of the worse for strep & flu, and now all sudden you don’t hear anything about it. Like flu and strep just took a step back to let Covid have it’s moment.

There was a document released yesterday by Diane Ravitch about the reopening of schools. It talks about reduced class sizes, staggered transporation schedules, social distancing, even staggering days in school so there are less kids in the building at once. I think this may be where we are headed for September.

Taxes for LI, NYC, and Westchester will not ever go down, only up. Not only are you paying very high salaries, but health insurance benefits and pension plans for these teachers/ admin cost an absolute fortune. I’m not sure who thought this was sustainable, it’s not.

But at least pre-pandemic every person in the area knew what they were signing up for (mind boggling taxes in exchange for the education system and special needs services - and that includes kids in the classroom 5 days a week every day of the school calendar minus days off ) and they chose to stay and pay. I know many teachers are pouring their hearts into their virtual teaching, but this new online learning in many instances is just busy work. And younger kids aren't able to work independently on a computer for hours. It goes against the very nature of schooling and pedagogy. It may work for high school students. But this has been a mess for everyone, most especially for younger kids, and will continue to be. $15k+ a year for worksheets you can get online for free?
And the reality is that it won't be long before those taxes go up for even less services. (3 days in the classroom, 2 days doing online busy work, no specials, etc) When is enough enough?
Just to be clear, I want to reiterate that my vent is not against teachers but the bureaucracy that is this area of this state.

there aren't - taking into account the "savings" along with the tax increase for the year - the budget our district is putting out will be just to keep things as they are right now, no changes.

DH was watching and he said Cuomo mentioned he'll make the announcement on schools tomorrow.
My only hope is some upstate schools will open this year and figure out how to work social distancing so we can follow suit in September.

They just mentioned on his call about camps opening - for childcare purposes - at limited capacity.
This makes me sad.
ETA - and because they are mentioning this - why haven't they mentioned anything about school?
The doctor was very wishy washy about camp - I am not sure if he has any clue. Then Cuomo said he will finally tell us what we already know about schools tomorrow.

I was talking to a friend who is a NYC teacher (I am in NYC schools too). She said her UFT rep is saying school won't be back to normal until January- then DH (who works in a hospital) said in January, it will be bad again because the virus is expected to upswing again with flu season--- but IDK.
She said the UFT rep said they are talking alternating schedules, lunch in classroom, still doing some remote learning, no specials, masks being worn ..it's a logistical nightmare. For the kids, for the parents, for the teachers...
I honestly would rather Cuomo with his "doom and gloom" rather than giving us false hope. I think he does it because if he says that things are better, people will ignore the rules and we'll have more cases. People are still getting sick. The hospitals are better able to handle cases now- but people are still being infected- even with all the rules in place. All I hear now is "two weeks until life is back to normal somewhat"-- that's not true and if that happens, the infection rate will spike and we'll be right back where we are.
See this is what I m confused about and may be someone can answer me.
Your DH and other medical professionals are saying there will be a spike in January, which, makes perfect sense. It seems regardless there is going to be a spike, there is no avoiding it. If we already started to relieve the stress on the medical community , shouldn’t things start slowly opening up in the summer? I’m obviously not a medical expert, but, wouldn’t it be better to deal with the spike during the summer as opposed to the height of Flu, Strep, and cold season? Let people start building some immunity over the summer who are asymptomatic or have minor symptoms? Especially predominant healthy kids?
Another honest questions, can part of the reason for increase in deaths during this time is because there is a combo of Flu-Strep-Covid illnesses? Like if this happened in the summer would the numbers be the same ?
I find it hard to believe that this year was one of the worse for strep & flu, and now all sudden you don’t hear anything about it. Like flu and strep just took a step back to let Covid have it’s moment.
I think any illness spikes in the winter months though. Your body's storage of Vitamin D from the Summer sunshine is depleted, and you can't fight off illness as easily. That's why the flu season isn't a thing in the Summer from what I've researched over the years. Vitamin D plays a vital role. Plus, people cooped up indoors more, more germs being spread in closer quarters. So yes, I think it will spike again, just like flu season does. But, maybe more people will wash their hands frequently, and still continue to practice the good hygiene they have learned from all of this! Thus, making it not AS bad.

If they don't reopen in the fall then I will move to a state where the schools are open. We also own two other properties where we could register our children for school so I would consider relocating to either one of those temporarily. There is no way I will stay on Long Island/in NY if most of the world is open and we are remaining closed. I am starting to hate Cuomo.
Wuhan, where this all started was closed completely for 79 calendar days. When it reopened, schools remained closed. Schools in New York have been closed for 34 school days, (44 calendar days) and New York has been "paused" for 28 business days (37 calendar days).
Watching all the places overseas that have reopened and then watched their numbers rise, and their death tolls increased is heartbreaking. Watching the daily death toll in New York is heartbreaking. I would hate to watch it go back up because we took our foot off the brake without watching where we were going.
My school district will have been closed 180 days by the time the first day of school rolls around if they don’t reopen before this school year is over. That almost 6 months. If we can’t reopen then but the rest of the country is open, I will move. 6 months is a long time to let this play out. They already think over 15% of people have had it and have some immunity.
But have they confirmed that you can't get it again?

Yes, which is why I laugh when all of these school officials mention January as being the magic month when schools can reopen. At the height of cold & flu season? On top of Covid? September will probably be safer than January!
