I think that they got lucky in that situation. $45 a bottle is definitely not bad. It is definitely the girls fault - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a bottle of wine can cost hundreds of dollars. They should have been more careful.

I agree.

One of my favorite places in LI is a BYOB, no corking fee. Quick trip to the liquor store one the way over-awesome

Honestly, if you frequent wineries as much as you say, you should have spoken up and ordered the wine.

I can accept it being our fault, and we will obviously ask in the future. I was just surprised based on every other experience we've had in years of going out to dinner together. I don't personally think that, whether we ordered it on purpose or not, $45 is exactly the cheapest bottle of wine on the market.

We're not quite that stupid to be unaware of the fact that bottles of wine can cost hundreds of dollars.

If I'm asked off the top of my head from which specific region of the world I would like my Merlot, no, I can't give an answer off the top of my head when I don't know all of the possibilities. However, I do spend a lot of time at wineries, checking out different wines, etc. There are PLENTY of great wines available for under $45.

I think it's a lesson learned. Although, I don't think $45 is that bad. It's true that there are plenty of good bottles under $45, but there is a considerable mark up at the restaurant. The cheapest I've seen would be around $30.

When you go there again ask to see the wine list. If $45 is the most expensive wine they have, then yes, he was a jerk. Lol.

I will go against the grain.

In those situations, as I have been in them, the waiter has ALWAYS given me a HOUSE WINE. Not something fancy and certainly not something that high of a cost.

I would be pissed.

It's taking advantage of the consumer.

I mean, I think most people would feel uncomfortable and tacky to agree to a wine suggested by a waiter and then ask, "Umm..by the way..how much is it?"

Can you imagine a guy doing that on a date? It's a reasonable question, just an uncomfortable one.

I'm willing to bet they know this, and therefore, can get away with it.

Usually in these cases, the waiters I have had have confirmed the price before going to get it.

I'm on the side of the girls.

ITA. I think the waiter took advantage of a bunch of girls whom he knew had no idea about wine or prices of bottles. He totally padded the check. Their fault for not asking, but let's be real here....he definitely took advantage of them.

Chat Icon

it was a douchey move on the waiters part.

I bet if you go online right now and look up the menu to the place, you will see the wine list and find out where you were placed.

and I think 45 bucks IS a lot for a "house" bottle (which is usually the cheapest...it's like asking for the tap water instead of opening the San Pelligrino. it's good and serves the purpose but it's nothing special)

so while YES technically the girls should have been more involved in the choice, this dude knew exactly what he was doing and I certainly would have taken that into consideration when assessing the tip.

There were six girls in the group, but only three of us had the wine. (We made it clear that only three of us were drinking.)

100% the girls fault. And for the record, a $45 bottle of merlot is not expensive, even at a "cheaper" place.

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I can drink an entire bottle by myself so I guess my opinion is kind of skewed. LOL 45 dollars for a bottle of wine between 3 people is not a lot. Also, you leave yourself open for a median bottle of wine when you say that it does not matter. Did he show you the wine before he corked it?

I called the restaurant since they don't have their menu or winelist up at present and I am getting a fax of both this afternoon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I will update BUT from the reviews I've read, it's probably overpriced from soup to nuts. it has VERY iffy reviews and a lot of that revolves around the service.

we shall see!

Re: What do you think of this situation?

I have to add though that for a recent "splurge" dinner my husband and I went out and spent almost $300 at a pricey place, and even THEY had a bottle of wine for $42.

if this places cheapest bottle is truly $45, I would be surprised.

what a friggin mess.

almost everything else is boring today. Chat Icon Chat Icon and it's a welcome distraction to my work day.

it just seems like such a dickish thing to do. at least if I see that the dude did give them the cheapest bottle (which is what I think would have been the RIGHT thing to do if he didn't talk to them about price at all) then I could give it a rest.

but if I am the only one "into" it, I'll just keep the results to my nosey bored self Chat Icon

Yes-we were really not "upset" about the price, as I put at the end of the my original post. We spent $30 each on the wine, and I don't think that's a big deal. We were just surprised it was a significantly different price than what we have usually paid.

I don't remember if he did or didn't.

I don't mind sharing it in an FM if you want to know the name.

Maybe this is weird...but unless a place has done something awful, I really don't like to post the name of it in a place where just anyone can read it. I'm just not comfortable doing that. I feel bad drawing negative attention to a place unless there is some radical reason to do so.

One of the reviews on Yelp said that they charge $10 for each person who doesn't show in your party. The reviewer said that the restaurant was almost empty when they arrived and when they left.
