What age did you start giving DC cold cuts, hot dogs, take out etc?

Just curious what age you started giving your DC these things. Specifics would be great.

I am just not sure what the consensus is on these things.

If you don't give these things yet, can you list your reasons why?

eta - bacon, sausage too

I haven't given DD cold cuts yet, but I know a lot of my friends with kids my DD's age have...they have antibiotic and nitrate free ones..I'm going to try them soon bc she's getting bored with the lunches I'm giving her Chat Icon

I want to say 18 months, but I honestly don't remember.

She eats Applegate Farms organic hotdogs 1x per month, maybe 2 if DH & I are eating hotdogs.

The first time she had cold cuts was at Panera (I thought it was a less expensive way to see if she liked it). I buy Applegate Farms smoked turkey breast. She eats that when she asks for turkey saaamwish. Chat Icon

I buy Whole Foods cold cuts(cut thick-the slicer is set to 40) then chop them. My kids LOVE them. Like D dsaid-Applegate Farms also has nitrate, preservative free cold cuts.

I think its fine to give these things as long as they are nitrate and preservative free(but you know I'm wacky about this stuff) and cut to proper size.

Re: What age did you start giving DC cold cuts, hot dogs, take out etc?

I just started giving them cold cut turkey (12.5 months) - the applegate farms brand. I give it to them once or twice a week to put something else into the rotation.

Hot dogs we probably won't give them until over the summer when it is BBQ season.

ETA: Take out - do you mean like chinese food? We haven't given them that yet. They have had food in restaurants though, like pizza, mac-n-cheese, and grilled cheese.

Re: What age did you start giving DC cold cuts, hot dogs, take out etc?

Liam has had both before a year (cold cuts at around 10 mos--he loves them)

We tried hot dogs, he wasn't a fan.

as far as take-out, he hasn't had asian, but does LOVE pizza, chicken nuggets/fingers, french fries, etc

He's had breakfast sausage, he likes.
No bacon yet but I'll try anything.

As you know, I'm laid back with this stuff. So far so good. But he also had eggs/peanut butter before a year as well.

I tried all that around 18 months. She still won't eat any of it. Occasionally a chicken nugget.

An occasional hot dog or french fry never killed anyone. If she'll eat it, I'll give it to her, because she's picky. Fortunately, DD favors things like fruit and carbs at the moment.

7 months, as soon as he was able to eat table foods. I just offered him whatever I was eating. The only things I held off on were:

honey (one year)
berries (one year)
shellfish (15 months)

He has had all nuts except for peanuts since 1 year as well (not by themselves but in other foods like bread and cereal). I am a chicken when it comes to peanuts and peanut butter, even though there is no history of food allergies in our family.

The applegate farms one, I assume that comes prepackaged?

Do we need to be concerned with Listeria at their age? That's what worries me.

Yes, it is prepackaged. I don't think listeria is a concern at their age, it is primarily a concern to fetuses, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.

I haven't done sausage or bacon, but I don't really eat those things myself.

It was pretty much after the 12 month mark I started introducing more things. I'm pretty lax, but would say she had all that stuff by 16 months.

Re: What age did you start giving DC cold cuts, hot dogs, take out etc?

DS is almost 13 months and he has had everything you listed except bacon and hotdogs. Honestly we just haven't had bacon in a very long time otherwise he would have had it.

I will not give him hot dogs, I've known 2 children last summer that choked and died on them. They were a bit older and I'm not sure if they were cut right or what have you, but it freaked me out so much that I don't want him to ask anybody for one when I'm not around.

I have to ask when he is allowed seafood. And I've given him a little peanut butter, but I've heard its a choking hazard so I don't give him sandwiches or anything like that.

DD is ten months and I just started giving her cold cut turkey and chicken.

Should I NOT be giving her cold cuts at this age?

I dont think my ped wanted DD to have them before one due to the Listeria risk. Ped told me anything I should not have had during pg she should not have until after one.

So thats what I did. Also the high nitrates in cold cuts are not good.

Marie, what did you give him (Chinese food)?

We get it once a week too but never sure what to give her if anything. We order stuff that we should not even be eating.Chat Icon

DS is 20 months. He gets hot dogs a couple of times a month- loves them. He also loves turkey breast slices. He hasn't had chinese food yet, but that's mostly because DH and I aren't big chinese food people- we order in a couple of times a year. He has had McDonald's chicken nuggets and pizza though.

Re: What age did you start giving DC cold cuts, hot dogs, take out etc?

She's 27 months and has never had cold cuts besides American Cheese. I just don't see a reason for her to have them. Same with Hot dogs.

She's had sausage usually when we are having some type of italian dish. I can't remember when she started and she's had some sushi as well.

She's never had chinese food.

Her guilty pleasure is McDonald's nuggets and fries.

DD had 1/2 piece of bacon yesterday for the first time ever. She has had all natural chicken sausage once and didn't like it.

As for take-out/fast food, DD has had pizza, a bite of a KFC chicken tender, and a bite of a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme which resulted in her first taste of lettuce.

I tried cold cuts around 1, he wouldn't eat them, at all.

He won't eat hot dogs

Actually, he won't eat meat at all unless it is chicken in a nugget formChat Icon

We don't eat chinese that much, the first ime he had it he just had the chicken from my sweet and sour chicken (our place makes it where you dip into the sauce) and some veggie fried rice. Now Ijust get him their chicken nuggets

I want to say around 16-18 months he started really having take out/dinners out/fast food.

I hate to say itChat Icon but one thing I can always get him to eat is the cheese roll ups from Taco Bell. I figure how bad can they be, it is just cheese in a torilla, right?
