Vent - My Boss is an #!@&!!

Background:

I am a high school guidance counselor - we have a part time school nurse. Whenever a kid is really sick ( or not really sick) they call an ambulance and take the kid to the hospitalChat Icon Guess who has to accompany them to the ER - yup - you guessed it - one of the guidance counselors - supposed to be an administrator which we are NOT but that's a whole other vent/post! I also work with a student population that many do not come from stable homes, etc - meaning not the most reliable parents and typically at a minimum you are waiting in the ER with the kid for about 1.5 hours and some people have gotten stuck for 4+ hours!!!

So - It popped in my head Sunday night that sooner or later, one of my students would go to ER and they'd ask me to go. No way am I going and exposing myself to sick people for hours in the ER thank you very much - flu, Swine flu, g-d only knows, right?

So I go in on Monday and respectfully tell my guidance director the above - not going to ER this year, etc - felt it was appropriate to bring up now before the situation arose, etc.

She comes back to me today and tells me my principal wants a doctor's note - really?? Seriously??? I have no problem getting a dr's note but really?? Can you use a little common sense or compassion or intelligence? I have to PROVE from a doctor that it's not the best idea for a pregnant woman to sit in an ER for hours, exposed to tons of sick people???? I'm in a county in South Florida where there were reported cases in the county last year AND in the schools!
Micro-managing azzhat!!! BTW - this jerkoff docked me pay for coming in four minutes late to work one day last week but told us we need to come in before contract hours on testing days - and we're working with no raise or contract right now!!

G-d I can't wait until January!!!!!

Thanks for letting me get this out!!

What a douche!! I would try and think of something else that the doc can 'forbid' you from doing to really stick it to them. And I would NOT go into school any earlier than necessary esp since he docked you 4 minutes! If he has a problem with this, tell him he can suck it! Hang in there honey, I am dealing with boobery over here too. I have 10 more weeks left until maternity and time is not moving fast enough!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG GABI this is the best. advice. ever.
That doctor's note would be 5 pages long for me - no lifting, no extended standing, no extended sitting, no exposure to chemicals & cleaning solvents, etc etc. *Perhaps* your boss is trying to cover himself in the event that the other guidance counselors have a "problem" with you not going Chat Icon -- he can simply say "doctor's orders, no ER" and they'll have no choice but to accept it. But I realize I'm being generous with that theory if he docked you for 4 minutes.

Re: Vent - My Boss is an #!@&!!

when i was preg with ds i was working ft midnights and was alone on the shift.. one night i had prob and it took me 2 hours to hold of a supervisor to get assistance so when i saw my boss after that i asked what the procedure would be if i went into labor while at work.. she promptly told me to cross my legs until the next shift came in.....

Right after i told her i was preg she also mandated me to work an extra shift as a double to cover a lack in staffing due to someone being on vacation.. that person on vacation was ME!!... when i asked waht would have happened if i had had vacation plans she told me i would be fired... the next time i worked i nicely came in with a note saying i was not to work more then my scheduled time.. so i went from working any shift she needed to my 5 a week... so she screwed herself

i hate bosses sometimes

I remember you told me this! Wow, have our bosses met? What a jackarse! Seriously, this doesn't take a huge leap in logic to figure out why a preggo just might want to avoid the ER.

No - there was a pg counselor in the office last year and we're all friends and support each other. We are all treated like sh1t and are all united in our hatred for him! I like the idea of a 5 page doctor's note though - lol!

Aaaaand, that would be discrimination. Make sure you document everything you do, say, meetings you have with bosses, conversations, emails- everything!! Just in case they do fire you and you can possibly bring a suit! Chat Icon

Its unfortunately not discrimination--if they would terminate a nonpregnant employee for taking too many sick days then unfortunately they can for a pregnant one. I would recommend anyone who is at risk of taking too many sick days to try and start FMLA.

Also...in regards to the above discussion:

In Ireland (where I live) it's actually against the law to fire a woman once she has declared that she is expecting. Your job is secure. You also get 6 months maternity leave standard. There are perks, even if you have to put up with a crazy medical system to get them!

AAAAAAAAAND, my sister's good friend is from Sweden where, I've been told, you are entitled to 1 - 1.5 years maternity AND paternity leave with FULL pay and your job guaranteed for you when you come back.

So, are we all moving to Sweden or what?
