UPDATED! At 34.5 weeks, would they try to stop labor? NFT

Update 5:45
Went to L&D with contrax about 8 mins apart. Good thing I went when I did b/c after being there for a half hour they started coming at 2 mins apart and very painful, like I had to hold in my screams. They monitored me for an hour like that with contrax 2 mins apart. I ended up getting a shot of Terbutaline which worked for about an hour. Then I started getting a few sporadic contractions. I just got home and they are back, about 10 minutes apart again. Since I had a previous c-section and since is twins, the high risk doctors are worried about a possible rupture, since I;ve been contracting for days. Plus the babies are not in position. It is likely that I will be going back to the hospital soon. Only good news is I am only a fingertip dilated.

Re: At 34.5 weeks, would they try to stop labor? NFT

When I was pregnant with the twins I was on procardia to help keep me from going into labor...

I stopped the procardia at 34 weeks b/c they told me that at that point they would be OK to be born...

Twins are considered term at 37 weeks. I never fully understood why until I was pregnant with Caden and it looked like he would be coming early as well. My doctor explained to me that twins actually mature faster in utero than do singletons.

My girls were born at exactly 35 weeks without any complications. They did stay in the hospital until they were a week old. But that was only b/c the doctor wanted to see that they were gaining weight before he would release them...

My dr. said she would try to stop labor up to 36 weeks and than anything after that just let nature take its course. I also got the steroids for the baby's lungs in case my water was to break because once that happens they have to deliver.

This is my situation exactly. I am also on the procardia. They will be taking me off that and bedrest at 36 weeks and then whatever happens happens.

Thanks- still having contractions less than 10 mins apart for the 4th day.
I feel so clueless, not sure what to do.

Re: At 34.5 weeks, would they try to stop labor? NFT

would they start procardia at this point or did I miss the "deadline"?

when I was there on Friday at my appointment having contrax the high risk dr. told me my scheduled c-section date but then made a joke "maybe we will meet the babies this weekend instead" which is making me think they wont stop it?

In that case I would rather wait it out at home then have to sit in L&D all day.

Not sure if they would give you the procardia now as they have said that it would be safe to deliver the babies at this point but you never know. I think the procardia works rather quickly into your system.

From what you've told me, it sounds like they are gonna let you go and not stop it.

And like I told you - I know SOOOO many people that had twins right around the 35 week mark and they were perfectly healthy.

When I had the twins my high risk doctor said there goal was to get me to 34 weeks and they would not stop labor. I had them at 36 because of other issues.

34.5 weeks is really good. Your babies will probably need NICU time, but they should be just fine.

I guess I am in denial because I don't want the babies to come early. Chat Icon

My high risk dr. happens to be at the hospital today so I am waiting for my midwife to talk to him and then call me back.

This has been going on for 4 days and seems like "early labor" but because it is twins and because they are not head down, and because they have stressed that they don't want my c-section to be an emergency, i finally decided to call.

I am hoping they can give me procardia or at least tell me I am not dilating and send me homw. I wanted to make it to 36 weeks at least.

Yeah, my high risk doc told me that he was really happy where things are, at this point. It sounds to me like they wouldn't stop it if I went into labor now. You're almost 35wks and that is really good!
I think calling was a good idea, though. I really don't want an emergency c-section, so any way you can be more ready for it will be best for you and the babies.

I went into the hospital at 34 weeks for contractions and they told me they would not stop me... and I had one baby! I ended up lasting until 37 weeks.

Re: At 34.5 weeks, would they try to stop labor? NFT

Julie, i KNOW your situation is different bc you're having twins, but I'm sure you remember my situation. I started having contractions consistently less than 10 minutes apart (most were 5-6 minutes apart, but only a few were painful) just before the 35 week mark. I was 2-3, then 3-4 cm dilated at my 2 L&D trips (7/8 and 7/26). He was born 7/30.

I was not given anything to stop the contractions, the Dr didn't seem worried about the baby.

My steady contractions continued for 21 DAYS (and 2 trips to L&D for monitoring), then my water broke and I finally had him 17 hrs later. I joke that I was in labor for 22 days Chat Icon. Funny, i actually was.

They did stop labor for me with my first....but he was only a singleton. Not sure if the same rules apply for multiples.

Wow! I am sure you are worried, but now that the drs know the situation , they can make sure that even being this early, if the babies have to come, they will be ready for them.

Im sure everything will be just fine.

Re: UPDATED! At 34.5 weeks, would they try to stop labor? NFT

My doctors said they would not stop labor after 35 weeks. They did, however try to stop the contractions by upping my dose of procardia, which worked. If it makes you feel any better, I was in the hospital at 35 weeks with very painful, very regular contractions. I was told I wouldn't be leaving the hospital without giving birth - but I did!
They gave be two shots of terb, upped my procardia, and kept me in the hospital for three days, but I went home, and made it to my scheduled c-section.
