Re: this stupid ice water challenge....

My husband and son were nominated. I feel it is a great teaching point for my 6 year old, who is excited about it. They will be dumping water to bring awareness to ALS, but also sending money to the American Cancer society in honor of My Father and My Husbands mom, who both died last year from it...DS will be pulling money from his piggy bank too.

It's not stupid, it is what you make of it.

So what about other charities.
Why is it only for ALS?
Why not cancer, heart disease, AIDS, etc etc.
Donate money.
Don't pour a bucket of water over your head.
I think that is why people are calling it stupid.
Because it doesn't make sense.

I think because this is one of the charities that gets less attention.

True, but there are 100s and 100s of little known charities and little known diseases, etc.
I just don't get it.
But more than that, I don't get the concept. Pour ice water on your head OR donate.
So everyone is pouring ice water on their heads.
Aren't they supposed to be donating instead of doing that?
Flawed if you ask me.

It has raised 2.3 MILLION dollars for ALS compared to 25,000 this same time last year. Do you know what kind of different 2.3 million can make towards research?!?!?! I dont see how that is stupid at all.

You dont have to do it, I probably wouldnt, but seeing how much good it has done, Id definitely donate now.

People really need to get over being "annoyed at a video" on your feed. No one is forcing you to watch it. Also, it seems silly to get bent out of shape bc someone is telling you how you should spend and or donate you money.

Take it for what it is. It has done a TON of good and I dont see how anyone can take issue with that. Just keep scrolling then.

Honestly, who cares? Why NOT ALS?
Its the ice bucket part that made it go viral. It has raised FOUR MILLION DOLLARS!

I cannot wrap my head around why people have an issue with this.

I think that is one of those things that got lost in a game of telephone.

I have heard so many different versions of it. You were supposed to donate & dump water and challenge other people to do it too, or donate a larger sum. Another version I saw was a college kid post the video & say he would donate 50 cents for everyone who liked his video.

As for why it is ALS, from what I heard friends of someone recently diagnosed did it in his honor & it spread from there.

I agree, but everyone I know has been donating as well ... just think, if it's raised an ADDITIONAL $2.8 MILLION over the same time period last year, who cares if it's just every other person who is actually donating. Raising awareness on a lesser known disease is HUGE. it will stick in people's minds.

It's raising awareness and boatloads of money.

And you can scroll past it or not accept a challenge to do it. No big deal.

So really, no whining.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....

My friend posted this on her FB. I couldn't agree more!!

To all of those who think that the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is stupid, pointless, etc... Please read this statement that was posted on the ALS Association's webpage on Tuesday "Between July 29 and today, August 12, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year. And have added over 70,000 new donors to the cause." This is HUGE. How many of you would have thought to donate to this cause? I for one know I wouldn't have. Who cares if you're supposed to accept the challenge and not donate, or accept and donate anyway, or just donate??? We wear Pink for Breast Cancer, We walk for MS, We Light the Night for Leukemia & Lymphoma, the list goes on and on, and all usually coinciding with a donation to the cause. This was started by a man who was diagnosed WITH the disease to raise awareness, his way of getting support out to the masses... and it's done just that. I would think in a world where there are so many life-threatening diseases that people suffer from, some that there is still no cure for, that the action of dumping some cold water on your head can raise awareness and money for research really wouldn't get people's panties in such a bunch. This challenge is far from silly, or pointless...Hey look, opinions are like @ssholes, everyone has one... and this is mine!

ETA - I did that challenge last night with my 3 1/2 yr old DS (he had warm water in his bucket) and I donated this morning. It was a great learning experience for the both of us. I didn't know much about ALS before this and I was also able to give DS a brief lesson on doing thing to help others and how it can also be fun.

I think it's wonderful. I've seen a lot of my friends on FB donating and pouring ice water over their heads for their friends and loved ones affected by this disease.

I like the idea of for every like the video gets $1 will go to the ALS charity of their choice.

I think it's stupid because no one on my FB feed is donating, their cheap @sses are just pouring water over their heads for attention.

Raising awareness alone isn't going to help any charity. Congrats to the ones who donated and actually raised money.

Sorry, but those disease you listed, even Aids, so not compare to als in terms of horror. At least with those disease there is some hope. They are also fabulously well founded and all have available treatment, unlike als. I have a son with cerebral palsy and my husband wanted to do the challenge and publicly statE on fb he was donating to UCP. I said absolutely not. Many forms of cp are a gift compared to als. And no, I am not personally affected by als. It's just that bad.

Only on LIF would people find a way to be negative about a "viral movement" that has done ZERO harm and 100% good to the tune of 4 million dollars.

Yes, raising awareness DOES help charities - IT'S SHOWN TO DO SO BY THE INCREASE IN THE AMOUNT RAISED SO FAR!!!! ALMOST A FULL $3MILLION INCREASE OVER THE SAME TIME LAST YEAR!!!!

Also, just because people aren't telling you how much they are donating, doesn't mean they aren't donating. Maybe all they could donate was $10 and don't want to be made to feel bad, or maybe they were able to donate $500 and don't want to make it seem like they are braggarts.

Chat Icon I agree. If you don't want to do it, don't. Nobody is forcing anyone. And if you don't want to watch the videos, don't. I don't see the big deal. I think anything that helps raise awareness and money for research for an incurable disease is a good thing. At worst, this is completely harmless. At best, it's helping to work towards a cure.

I'm THRILLED people have donated $4 million more.

ALL except one of the at least 20 videos on my feed poured ice water on them INSTEAD of donating. That makes me shake my head. Even in the videos of Timberlake, the Jets, etc. - no one mentioned "I'm doing this AND donating."
