Teal Pumpkin Project
As an allergy mom, I LOVE this idea and we will be participating. My daughter has SO many severe allergies that this makes me really happy.
Basically, you participate by having non-food treats for trick-or-treaters--you can still have traditional candy as well to give out to non-allergy children. I plan on buying some cheap novelties on Oriental Trading and painting one of our pumpkins teal
Just wanted to share--the more participants, the better for all of the allergy children out there!

Our whole neighborhood got on board with this last year. Not one non-allergy item was taken. I think it's a great idea but didn't work out to well for us.

This
Tho as the night ended, I just added the stuff with the candy to the trick or treaters. So it wasn't a complete waste. I'll do it again - even if just one kid gets to experience the fun of Halloween, its worth it

Re: Teal Pumpkin Project
We've been doing the for a few years. I have flags that I hang outside the house for various reasons (mainly the US flag, but I have a few others). During Halloween, I have an orange pumpkin flag, and another one that we painted teal to hang next to it. I couldn't find a teal pumpkin flag anywhere last year to purchase, so I just made my own.

I love that so many of you have participated! I never even heard of it before this year and I guess I never really thought about non-food treats until I had my daughter and we became an allergy family.

Re: Teal Pumpkin Project
Does it have to be teal? While I love the color, it doesn't really "go" with any of my Halloween decorations. Lol I guess that's the whole point is to have a standout color.
Can it be purple or lime green? Stupid question/first world problem I know lol.

I've never heard of this, but I think it's great. DS2 has a peanut and almond allergy, but I don't think he'd want trinkets in lieu of candy. My plan for this year is to buy safe candy for him and out it in his bag. He's still young, so he won't notice and will just be excited to eat candy. But I'll definitely participate for other allergy kids.

Teal pumpkins are very big around here!. I think its great. We dont get trick or treaters at my house but where we go trick or treating most every house has a candy/non candy option.

Non-food items are preferred so that everyone is included. Any kind of candy is off-limits to diabetics, even if they have no allergies.

We didn't get a single TOTer last year, but I love this idea. I am thinking of doing all non edibles this year because I don't want the candy in my house!!!!

Yeah, I get it, but I was saying personally I don't think my son would want toys instead of candy since he knows what it is and loves to eat it. We just came from a birthday party and I forgot to bring safe dessert for him and it broke my heart when he was asking for cake while everyone else ate it. He's only 2, so he would probably throw the toy aside and ask for candy. I'm definitely planning on participating for other kids though- always breaks my heart when not everyone can participate!

Ah ok, did not know this. I would love to participate. We hardly get any trick-o-treaters though.

Re: Teal Pumpkin Project
I have a question... how do you KNOW a kid wants an alternative treat? Do the kids say it? The parents? I just feel like the kids would forget with all the excitement.

Re: Teal Pumpkin Project
If you place the teal pumpkin outpace parents will know that a non edible treat is available
So then they would go to that house Kwim?

DS has a nut allergy. Last year (at 2.5 yo) we taught him to say "No nuts" when he was out eating, at school, etc. So he said that when he was ToTing. He did not get caught up in the excitement, though I am obviously there to check, too. This is the way he will have to live the rest of his life, so the allergist told me to teach him very young, and I'm glad I did. He always brings me food to check, and even when we're at the supermarket shopping, he goes down the aisles saying, "No nuts, mommy!" It's his way of life.

DS (13 this year), loves handing stuff out to the ToTers. Last year, he would offer both the candy and the teal pumpkin items to everyone. That way, if anyone was shy, they didn't have to ask, and if someone without an allergy liked the items we had, they could have a non-candy item, too. I think it took the stigma off of being "different", since everyone was treated the same.

So do you do options? Like you buy candy for those that don't have allergies and those who have allergies you give the "treat"?
