If you are participating, do you have the nonfood treats out for all kids or are you keeping them aside for people who specifically ask for them?

Re: Teal pumpkin question

I have 2 buckets, one for candy and one for allergies (pencils, stickers, glow sticks etc). This was my first year doing it, so I wasn't exactly sure if a child with an allergy couldn't touch the candy. I was hoping to have one child to find out (I'm OOS so ours was tonight from 6-8) and nobody came wanting anything but candy lol.

I keep them separate for people who ask (I also only have 16 items)

Re: Teal pumpkin question

We have separate items, but we do have plenty of candy for anyone who wants and is able to have candy.

I don't have enough to offer nonfood treats to everyone so I just hope no one that needs is hesitant to come out and ask for them. I guess that's my real concern.

I put a sign on my door to ask for non food treats. I am not offering that bucket unless the kids ask for it. I think if the kids have a severe enough allergy they will ask because I'm sure they will love getting a treat they can keep!

Did anyone have a child come and request a non candy item? We must have had over 100 kids so far and not one single kid did not want candy. With such a big push to join this initiative, I would have thought I would have had at least a few.

Believe it or not, many allergy parents and kids still don't know about it, especially if they're not active on FB.

But out of 100, with a sign on the door, you would think there would be SOME kids with allergies wanting non food items. I'm guessing kids with severe enough allergies that can't have the candy aren't trick or treating. Or, the parents are hopeful that they can find a few items in their bucket that they can have (lots of different candy choices given on Halloween). I always have plastic Halloween stuff, and the kids only ever want the candy.

I gave out some non food items... Some kids opted for that instead of candy... Don't know if they had allergies or not but I feel good that at least they had a choice... I had a boy Come by last year that wa so upset that yet again, he couldn't have anything... That alone made me go teal this year!

Same here. I don't think we had anyone with an allergy, but we had a few requests for non-foods.

I'm thinking that kids with severe allergies just aren't ToTing. I was diagnosed as a diabetic at age 12. I didn't go ToTing after that, since I knew I wouldn't be able to have anything.

No one asked here. I know many parents with food allergy whose kids who don't ask. They just trade after ToTing for safe items. I think only those with the most severe nut allergy only might ask. I have ToT'ed with nut kids and they just picked the non nut candies. A lot of houses had pretzels this year or chips. One mom had lollipops and had the label for the allergy moms to read. I know when my daughter used to be allergic to chocolate I had her just pick anything, then at home we did an even switch. We did not see a single teal pumpkin.

I think there is a major reason why this movement isn't larger. If kids have serious, severe allergies, how are their parents supposed to trust that even the non-food items, or non-allergen-containing items, from a stranger's house didn't touch something that contains an allergen?

If the allergy is contact or airborne, then it isn't simply a matter of avoiding a particular piece of candy's consumption.

My kids have a rare allergic condition which prevents them from being able to eat anything from outside of our home or any packaged foods at all, but we still go TOTing. They actually had a reaction just from TOTing yesterday (from the few times they grabbed the candy from the bowl). So you're right about that. But non-food treats can easily be washed. I don't allow them to play with the toys until we get home. But they were SO excited at the two houses where they received non-food treats! For the few kids that do ask for non-food items, it's really a blessing for them to almost feel normal.

I do two separate bowls and offer both (one peanut-free candy, one non-candy treats). It's not my business who has allergies or aversions, and maybe the kid just doesn't like the candy I'm offering.

We offered both bowls at the same time. We have a son with a nut allergy so all the candy was safe for him (Tootsie Rolls, Skittles, etc), but then we also had a bowl with tattoos, spider rings, and leftover trinkets from my son's bday party (the stuff that would go in the take home treat bag). DH said hardly anyone picked something from the non-food bowl - even though both bowls were offered at the same time.

I had a separate pumpkin with stickers out and a larger pumpkin with candy (but, I wasn't home).

We did have a child trick or treating with us who had a peanut allergy and only one of the 50+ homes we went to advertised that they had non food items for children with allergies but, some of the homes had items that were safe for children with nut allergies to eat.
