Spinoff to credit or debit post: How much credit card debt do you have? w/poll
I heard on the news the average American family has anywhere from $15-20k in credit card debt. Just wondering if it is accurate.

about $750 - for our flat panel TV. we bought it last summer with 0% interest for 18 months.

I received an unheard of 0% til paid off offer from Citibank a few years ago- I started off putting 10K on it, I'm down to about 5K since it's 0%, I don't feel any urge to pay it off early!!

Very little. I have a visa for emergencies, which has about 750 on it and DH uses an AMEX.
ETA: HOWEVER, I don't want to make it seem like I am a super responsible, "I would NEVER get into debt" type of gal, I once had CC bills over 30K. I worked VERY hard to pay them down...worked summer school, weekends, tutored etc. I have really learned since then...

I bet thats right! I imagine those that are proud to have no credit debt will answer while those drowning will just do your poll or not answer at all. I wouldnt think its hard to put yourself in 10-15k debt.

We have none. We use our CC for almost everything, but only buy things we can pay for at the end of the month.

we have too much for my taste right now - but we have more than enough in our savings account to pay it off - all our CC debt right now is 0% - so id rather make interest on the $$$ than pay off my CC- once we pay them off, we are done with CCs (it was some grad school tuition and home improvements - so its not like it was frivouls spending!)

Same here- he is in charge of the money because he's more disciplined. I don't spend a lot, but pre-DH I always found a reason to not pay it in full.

i have none now but in the past went through a very rough patch and had a lot of debt, over 10k, it sux but sometimes its the only way you can pay for things, even the basics like food and gas and basic clothing

We have none
However, for all of you struggling with debt, just want to say that there was a time when we were over $15k (thanks to DH prior to when we were together) and it took time, patience, sacrifice and planning but we paid it off together. And vowed never to get back there again!
